5 Killed in Norway Bow-and-Arrow Mass Shooting

Police in Norway say five people were killed Wednesday evening when a man armed with a bow and arrows went on a rampage in a town west of Oslo. Police say the man was arrested and he appears to have acted alone, the BBC reports. According to local media, the man first opened fire around 6:30pm local time at a supermarket in Kongsberg, a town of around 28,000 people. Authorities say two injured people are in intensive care, including an off-duty police officer who was in the store when the attack began. Police Chief Oeying Aas says the suspect is in custody but he has not been questioned yet.

Police say the man walked around the town center firing arrows at people in several locations. Officials say it is too early to tell whether the incident is terror-related, reports CNN. Acting Prime Minister Erna Solberg described the attack as “gruesome” and prime minister-designate Jonas Gahr Stoere, who is expected to take office Thursday, called it a “cruel and brutal act,” the AP reports.

A lot of resources were sent from several places, including Oslo police district, the bomb squad, national police, and emergency response teams,” Aas told reporters, adding that officers are still securing several crime scenes. Police in Norway are usually unarmed, but after the attack, the country’s national police directorate ordered officers nationwide to carry firearms, the Guardian reports. (Read more Norway stories.)
