The football world has been closely watching a pair of teams in the NFC East since both made ugly exits from the postseason in the wild-card round. On Wednesday, there could be some clarity from one of them. Via Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni will meet Wednesday with owner Jeffrey Lurie and G.M. Howie Roseman. It’s a routine meeting, which will follow exit interviews with players and meetings with coaches. The circumstances are anything but routine.

It sounds like a ridiculous question but it’s one that Lurie and Roseman need to come to grips with, because they cannot waste another year of A.J. Brown’s, DeVonta Smith’s, Jalen Hurts’, or Dallas Goedert’s prime in 2024. They need to know right now whether Sirianni and/or Johnson have answers for why the offense completely fell apart at the end of this season, and why it was rickety throughout the ‘23 campaign. Their failure to adjust for blitzing at any point this year, but particularly over these last few weeks and in last night’s wild card loss, is inexplicable. I can’t imagine how they will justify their decision-making to Lurie in their end-of-year meetings. TEN. UNBLOCKED. PRESSURES. This was not a surprise game plan by Tampa. These were not exotic blitzes. Todd Bowles telegraphed where they were coming from and Sirianni continued to motion backs and tight ends out of the backfield and send receivers on vertical routes, resulting in an insanely low time to throw for Hurts. Maybe they should have tried to consult some outside experts to help in this area?

The Eagles are left to lick their wounds and wonder what the hell happened after going to Tampa Bay, facing the worst team in the playoffs, and proceeding to get dog walked by Baker Mayfield. The Eagles never looked competitive in their 32-9 loss the Buccaneers, despite finishing the season 11-7. We witnessed a preseason Super Bowl favorite crumble before our eyes, and find a way to look worse than the Panthers did a week earlier. Carolina lost 9-0 to Tampa Bay in a Week 18 game that was actually competitive for much of the afternoon. A confluence of factors precipitated this downfall. The loss of both their offensive, and defensive coordinator to head coaching jobs following the Super Bowl, the hangover from the big game itself, and dealing with a weight of expectations all played a role in why Philadelphia didn’t meet its potential this season. Nick Sirianni is also owed a heaping helping of blame for the stupidest, most mind-numbing in-season coaching decision we’ve ever seen in taking defensive coordinator Sean Desai off playcalling duties, and replacing him with senior defensive assistant Matt Patricia.

This talented team just completely fell apart. It was a stunning meltdown in the second half of the season. Unsurprisingly, this led to questions about Sirianni’s job status following Monday night’s debacle. “I’m not thinking about that,” the third-year coach said. “I’m thinking about the guys. Again, there’s a lot of guys in that locker room, all the guys in that locker room, every single one of them that put their heart and soul into this. I’m not worried about me.” Personally, I’m worried about the future of the Eagles if they decide to just stay the course. And suddenly, there is a glut of qualified head coaches available to take on this challenging job in a passionate sports market. Belichick? Vrabel? Pete Carroll? I’d be confident in any of them righting this ship.

His journey to where he is now didn’t come easy. It’s been a long, long time coming for him, and every year since I’ve been here, it’s been, ‘Are you going to come back?’ “But he knows how much I love and appreciate him. He knows how much I’ve learned from him. He’ll forever have a special place in my heart.”

Brandon Graham’s goal has always been to play 15 years in the NFL. He’s pretty darn close. The Eagles lost to the Buccaneers in the playoffs on Monday night, wrapping up Graham’s 14th NFL season. After the 32-9 loss, Graham was asked if he’s returning next year. “I want to,” the 35-year-old answered. “It’ll be my farewell tour next year. If the Eagles want me to do it one more time, I would love to be here for another year. Because I know we got something special. Fifteen, my farewell tour. I’ll be done next year.” Graham plans to retire after the 2024 season but he wants to run it back one more time with the Eagles.

You have to hand it to the Eagles: They managed to take one of the NFL’s elite pass-rushers, maybe the most feared force on their entire defense, and make him disappear. Patricia showed up here this season with that Bill Belichick pedigree, with the experience of working under the coach who, more than any other, knew how to maximize a player’s strengths and minimize his weaknesses. Yet Patricia never managed to slide that pencil from his ear and scratch out some schemes that might free Reddick from his outside-linebacker spot for a few clear shots at opposing quarterbacks, and Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni kept letting Patricia get away with that coaching malpractice.

Finding Fault – Iggles Blitz
While the Eagles offense remained one of the Top 10 units in the league for the season, they struggled down the stretch. The offense was held to 19 or fewer points in 5 of the final 7 games. The last three weeks, teams had success blitzing the Eagles. Sirianni had no answers for that, which drew the ire of anyone and everyone who watched the Eagles play. The Eagles kept doing the same thing, over and over. It kept failing, over and over. Yikes. Sirianni is supposed to be an offensive guru. The fact he couldn’t come up with answers despite having plenty of talent to work with is a bad look. Really bad. The other issue with Sirianni is that he couldn’t push the right buttons with this team. He got so much right with the 2022 team and so much wrong with this one. Players underachieved. There were weird vibes all year. Sirianni had to talk to AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert at different points in the season about their lack of touches. Too often the players felt more like 53 independent contractors than one team. There was a lot of celebrating and fun in 2022. That was missing this season. Sirianni has a lot to answer for.

Orlovsky illustrated two separate plays in which the Buccaneers’ defense used the blitz against the offense, which had no answer for it. Tampa Bay even managed to stop the oft-unstoppable Tush Push — with an assist from the Eagles’ NFC East rival Giants. All told, Philadelphia recorded just 276 total yards of offense, including just 42 yards rushing, the fewest of any team in the Wild Card round, and 234 yards passing. The Buccaneers kept the Eagles to one touchdown and zero third-down conversions in nine tries. “That’s really what happened last night and the story for this offense realistically for the last 10 weeks,” Orlovsky concluded. “Poor plan and no desire to hurt the defense when they try to dictate to you. That’s one of the reasons why this offense completely fell apart.”

Report: Mike McCarthy to meet with Jerry Jones later this week – Blogging The Boys
On one hand it is fair to say that McCarthy pulled the best football that we have ever seen out of Prescott when he took over as offensive play-caller, but on the other hand the team just got destroyed in embarrassing fashion. They became the first team to ever lose to a #7 seed in the playoffs and were the only home team to lose across Wild Card Weekend. The idea that there has to be a fall person for this is common in situations like this, but that is the case because somebody is usually to blame. While it is a divisive subject, the reality of Prescott’s contractual status reinforces that he is not going anywhere. If you can make peace with that whether as a team member or as a fan is one thing, but the organization is nowhere near as tied to McCarthy in the way that their salary cap is to the quarterback. But this report is perhaps laying the groundwork. We will see.

Giants position reviews, tight end: Darren Waller was good, but not as good as hoped – Big Blue View
The New York Giants took a big swing at tight end last offseason, acquiring two-time 1,100-yard receiving tight end Darren Waller for a third-round compensatory pick the Giants received from the Kansas City Chiefs for Kadarius Toney. Turning Toney into just about anything living, willing to practice and play, and at least somewhat productive is a net positive. Still, the deal for Waller did not turn out to be as impactful for the offense as the Giants hoped.

The Los Angeles Rams were eliminated by the Detroit Lions, losing 24-23. Rams DC Raheem Morris has a virtual interview scheduled with Washington this week. Lions OC Ben Johnson is still in the playoffs, but he’s also in high demand for teams looking for head coaches. Johnson has an interview scheduled with Washington on Friday.
