Fort Worth restaurateur, cookbook author solicited prostitution at hotel, authorities say

A widely known chef who has owned or managed a series of Texas restaurants agreed in early June in Grand Prairie to pay money for a sex act, law enforcement authorities allege.

The Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office last week charged Grady Spears, who is 55, with soliciting prostitution. The offense, as it is charged in Spears’ case, is a state jail felony.

Grand Prairie police on June 5 arrested Spears at a Hyatt Place hotel, according to a police incident report.

Bond was set at $1,500 and executed. Spears’ current residence address is in Fort Worth, according to a Tarrant County District Clerk record.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram could not reach Spears for an interview.

Mark Beseda, a Grand Prairie police spokesperson, declined to release information about the investigation or the circumstances of the arrest and directed a reporter to file an open records request. In response to such a request, the city released an incident report without a narrative.

With partners, Spears co-founded the now-closed Horseshoe Hill Cafe in the Stockyards. He was the original chef at Reata, in downtown Fort Worth and Alpine, restaurants with which he is no longer involved. Spears has written several cookbooks.

The magazine PaperCity in June 2023 reported that Spears was to open new restaurants in Bellville and Round Top.

Spears was in 2018 charged with assault with bodily injury of a family member in a case in which police alleged that he assaulted his wife.

Spears was ordered to complete a partner abuse intervention program, and the charge was dismissed, according to a memorandum that described an agreement reached by a prosecutor and Spears’ attorney.

Police officers at the couple’s home in Fort Worth on July 2, 2018, found that Spears’ wife had bruises on her face and other parts of her body, police said. She told officers Spears hit her multiple times.

The couple divorced later in 2018.
