Nicki Minaj seemed to be getting back to what she does best on Saturday night after she was spotted leaving a recording studio with her family in tow.
The 38-year-old rap superstar showed a lovely new shade of red hair as she left the studio in Weehawken, New Jersey, with her husband Kenneth Petty, 43, carrying their one-year-old son, whom they’ve nicknamed Papa Bear.
Nicki appeared to be focused again on music after recent weeks in which she’s been in the spotlight for tiffs with other musicians, coronavirus vaccine misinformation and her husband’s ongoing legal troubles.
Bring your family to work day: Nicki Minaj, 38, was seen with stunning red locks as she left a recording studio in Weehawken, New Jersey, late on Saturday with her husband Kenneth Petty, 43, and their son ‘Papa Bear,’ one, at her side
Nicki toned down her usually colorful outfit in favor of a simple black ensemble with a short skirt and knee-high black boots.
But she made up for the monochrome look with her orange-tinted locks, which cascaded down her shoulders in voluminous waves.
She had a look of surprise on her face as a masked up woman spoke to her.
Kenneth wore black jeans and a black hoodie with a backward baseball cap, and he held little Papa Bear in his arms while wrapped up in a brown-and-white blanket.
The little boy, whose real name has never been publicly shared, celebrated his birthday late last month.
Fierce: Earlier in the day, Nicki shared some stunning photos of herself in a black-and-white leopard-print mini dress with red boots and a blond wig
New music? It’s not clear what project Nicki was working on in the studio, but she’s been teasing a new album since 2019
Public health: Last month she said she wouldn’t release any more music this year after fans berated her for revealing she’s unvaccinated against Covid-19
It’s not clear what project Nicki was working on in the studio, but she’s been teasing a new album since 2019.
But in a tweet from September 13, the rapper and singer suggested she wasn’t going to both releasing more ‘scraps’ from her upcoming LP after fans and critics lambasted her over comments she made about the safety of coronavirus vaccines.
‘I was about to give yall way more than scraps but ykw. I’ll talk to y’all next year. Ima leave the stu & go in the backyard & get in the pool with [bear emoji],’ she wrote. ‘I can’t get this time back with my pickney. God bless my real babies.’
That same day, she set off a firestorm of replies after she posted a debunked tweet about a family member refusing to get a Covid vaccine.
‘My cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen,’ she wrote. ‘His friend was weeks away from getting married, now the girl called off the wedding. So just pray on it & make sure you’re comfortable with ur decision, not bullied.’
Terrence Dyalsingh, the health minister of Trinidad and Tobago, later criticized her tweet and said his department hadn’t seen a single documented case of swollen testicles after getting a coronavirus vaccine.
Doesn’t add up: ‘My cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen,’ she tweeted, though Trinidad and Tobago’s health minister later said no documented cases fit her description
However, swollen testicles can be a side effect of common sexually transmitted diseases, among other illnesses.
Nicki also earned the ire of some of her fans when she shared that she wasn’t vaccinated around the same time, and therefore wouldn’t be attending the Met Gala, which required that all guests be fully vaccinated.
However, the musician has continued to claim that she is not anti-vaccine, and she has suggested in other tweets that she will likely get the vaccine in the future, as it will probably be a requirement for her to go back on tour.
Earlier this month, Nicki came to the defense of former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson as she criticized current member Leigh-Anne Pinnock for allegedly bullying her.
Speaking out: Earlier this month, Nicki came to the defense of former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson as she criticized current member Leigh-Anne Pinnock for allegedly bullying her. She took aim at Leigh-Anne and blasted her for bully Jesy, who has previously struggled with suicidal thoughts
The row came after Leigh-Anne reportedly accused Jesy of ‘blackfishing,’ which describes when a white people style themselves so as to appear to be Black.
During an Instagram Live session, Nicki claimed the current Little Mix members were trying to scuttle Jesy’s burgeoning solo career and called them ‘jealous miserable clowns.’
The clash ramped up when the Anaconda rapper doubled down and referenced Jesy’s history with suicidality.
‘JeLeigh btchs actin real messy. ~ if you know someone has been suicidal from bullying in the past, why try to get a bunch of ppl to bully them again about smthng else, on an even bigger scale?’ she wrote on Twitter.
‘Shame on you— that’s rlly sad. You don’t know what ppl can deal with. Mental Health [sic].’
Not holding back: After lashing out at Leigh-Anne on Instagram live, Nicki then took aim at Leigh-Anne’s ‘messy fans’, accusing them of having a negative impact on Jesy’s mental health
Nicki’s latest conflict with other entertainers comes after she was embroiled in the legal fallout related to her husband’s past conviction for attempted rape, which he pleaded guilty to.
Last month, Jennifer Hough, the woman who accused Petty of rape in 1994, made an appearance on The Real to delve into her experiences both with Petty and Minaj.
Hough, who appeared with her lawyer Tyrone A. Blackburn, recently filed a $500,000 lawsuit against the couple, claiming that they have harassed her to get her to drop her accusations against Petty.
‘[Petty] did something a long time ago and he had consequences that he was supposed to stick with. What they did to me and my family wasn’t OK,’ she said.
‘It wasn’t right and it doesn’t matter how much money you have. It doesn’t matter what your status is, you can’t intimidate people to make things go better for you. And that’s what they did.’
Family: She shares her son with husband Kenneth Petty, 43, who pleaded guilty in 1995 to a felony county of attempted rape
She shared details of the 1994 incident crime, which led Petty to plead guilty to attempted rape the following year.
Hough, who was only 16 at the time, said she was walking with Petty when he suddenly pulled at her jacket.
‘I felt something in my back so I just assumed there was a gun,’ she said. ‘And I started walking. And I’m pleading with him the whole way, trying to understand what he wants.’
She claimed that Petty said she ‘knew what he wanted’ before the alleged assault.
‘I didn’t know why it didn’t dawn on me to like really fight,’ she mused. ‘I just held on to my pants and he held my arms down and squeezed the sides of my stomach so hard. I let go and as soon as I let go he grabbed my pants. It was like a tug of war and after a while I just got tired.’
She added that the convicted felon ‘stood in the mirror and beat his chest’ after the attack.
Once she was free, she alerted a security guard at a school nearby, who contacted the police on her behalf, leading to Petty’s arrest.
Opening up: Jennifer Hough, 43, the woman who accused Petty of rape in 1994, appeared on The Real Wednesday in an interview saying she’s ‘tired of being afraid’ as she opened up about her experiences with both, past and present
Both Petty and Minaj have said that the encounter was consensual and that Hough was in a relationship with Petty at the time, but she denied those claims.
She admitted to worrying when Petty married Minaj that she would be dragged into the spotlight due to his past conviction.
Hough said she was ‘so afraid of being found out,’ and ‘so afraid of being known as the person he violated.’
She continued, claiming that Minaj had tried to pay her off to make her recant her accusations.
Harassment: Hough claimed that Minaj and Petty harassed her and tried to pay her to recant her allegations, especially after he was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender in California
‘She called me and she said that she got word that I was willing to help them out in a situation,’ she said. ‘I didn’t understand what she was referring to. She offered to fly me and my family to LA. I turned it down. And I told her, woman-to-woman, this really happened. And I hadn’t spoken to her since.’
After Petty was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender in California, Hough said the harassment from the couple picked up, as they allegedly tried to pay for her silence.
Just days after he accepted a plea deal, Hough filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Eastern New York against Minaj and Petty.
