City of Commerce to host multiple meetings to gather community input on comprehensive plan

Aug. 5—Current and expected future population growth is something many Hunt County communities are trying to prepare for. This, of course, includes the city of Commerce.

This Tuesday marks Commerce’s first “community collaboration” meeting regarding the development of a comprehensive plan.

The City’s comprehensive plan differs from its recently-completed strategic plan in that the comprehensive plan is to be longer-reaching but broader in scope, while the strategic plan mostly dealt with specific short-term projects.

This Tuesday’s community meeting about the comprehensive plan is scheduled for 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church at 1401 Washington St. in Commerce. The main objective of the meeting will be to collect community input on future land use.

“Future land use planning is essentially a roadmap for how a city or region will develop in the coming years, typically 20-30 years,” a post from the City of Commerce said. “It’s a way to envision and strategically plan for things like housing businesses, transportation and green spaces.”

While not scheduled yet, future community collaboration meetings about the comprehensive plan are to cover the topics of:

—Transportation and mobility,

—Housing, neighborhoods and parks,

—Parks and downtown,

—Growth management and

—Implementation planning.
