Blue Bell has released a new ice cream flavor inspired by a treat that was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but has since become a beloved dessert in Louisiana.
The Texas company announced that their new and limited flavor, Gooey Butter Cake Ice Cream, will be available in stores Monday. The ice cream features cream cheese and pieces of butter cake — commonly referred to as ‘ooey-gooey.’
“Our ice cream is a great introduction if you have not tasted a gooey butter cake,” Carl Breed, vice president of sales and marketing at Blue Bell, said in a news release.
This isn’t the first time Blue Bell has created a flavor celebrating popular desserts in Louisiana.
In 2012, the company released their Mardi Gras King Cake flavor, featuring pieces of the cake combined with green icing swirls and sprinkles, that has since become sold nationwide.
Bakeries throughout Louisiana have even combined the St. Louis-native dessert with king cake. New Orleans’ Bayou Bakery’s Carnival king cake, topped with an ooey-gooey icing made of cream cheese, butter and sugar, is just one example.
Blue Bell’s Gooey Butter Cake Ice Cream can be found in stores in the half gallon and pint sizes for a limited time.
