Gov. Gavin Newsom, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats joined Republicans as California leaders Saturday evening prayed for President Donald Trump after he fell to the ground, injured as gun shots rang out during a rally in Pennsylvania.
“Violence has no place in our democracy,” Newsom said in a tweet.

Pelosi, whose husband was attacked by an intruder in his San Francisco home in 2022, recalled that incident.
“As one whose family has been the victim of political violence, I know firsthand that political violence of any kind has no place in our society. I thank God that former President Trump is safe,” she said.

Republicans also reacted with horror at the shooting, which came two days before the GOP gathers for its national convention in Milwaukee. Trump is scheduled to be formally nominated at the convention.
