D.C.-area forecast: A drenching but welcome rain today

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

5/10: A midrange 5 for those who hate and those who celebrate today’s rainy state.

  • Today: Rainy, breezy. Highs: 48-55.
  • Tonight: Rain ending late. Lows: 45-55.
  • Tomorrow: Partly sunny, breezy. Highs: 55-63.

Vigorous low pressure traveling into the Ohio Valley along a cold front sends a serious soaking into the Mid-Atlantic today. This delivers a needed 1 to 2 inches of rain by late tonight. The messy weather clears out Wednesday and also sets up a sunny, seasonable Thanksgiving Day.

Tranquil weather should continue into Black Friday, but the weekend could see some increase in cloud cover, cooler weather and perhaps a period of rain.

Today (Tuesday): Rain develops this morning from southwest to northeast. Rain may be moderate to heavy at times this afternoon into the evening, so allow extra time for travels. Highs range from the upper 40s in northwest areas to the mid-50s southeast of the Beltway. Winds from the east at 5 to 15 mph, gusting up to 25 to 35 mph, add a chill. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Rain continues through the evening hours and ends late at night. It’s mostly cloudy and breezy after the rain ends. Winds come from the south and then southwest at 5 to 15 mph with gusts of 20 to25 mph at times. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Breezy conditions continue with a mix of clouds and sun. Highs range from the mid-50s to low 60s. Winds blow from the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 25 to 30 mph at times. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: It’s partly to mostly cloudy and still breezy with lows from the lower 30s in the outer suburbs to the lower to middle 40s in the city. Confidence: Medium-High

Thanksgiving Thursday should finally see mostly sunny skies with highs within a few degrees of 55. It may still be somewhat breezy but, overall, is a pretty typical late November day. Thursday night features mostly clear skies with lows from the lower 30s to lower 40s. Confidence: High

Friday looks mostly sunny in the morning, but we could shift to partly cloudy by afternoon as highs range from near 50 in our cooler suburbs to the mid-50s in town. Friday night is also on the partly cloudy side as lows range through the 30s. Confidence: Medium

The final weekend of November leans cooler to colder than normal. Saturday sees highs in the 40s to near 50. After lows in the 30s to low 40s, Sunday should be slightly milder with highs probably edging above 50 in most areas. Low pressure developing to the south could bring a period of rain, but the timing is uncertain, and models have backed away some from that possibility. Confidence: Low-Medium
