Dolphins reportedly make change to playing surface days before hosting Titans in primetime

The Miami Dolphins will have some nice new carpet in their state-of-the-art home for the players to sink their feet into when the Dolphins and Tennessee Titans square off on Monday Night Football at Hard Rock Stadium.

According to Peter King’s Monday FMIA Week 14 article, the Dolphins switched out their grass surface with a new one on Tuesday of last week.

5. I think I love this little note from the week in Miami: The turf was replaced Tuesday night at Hard Rock Stadium, and the Tennessee-Miami game tonight will be the first NFL game played on the new grass. The turf comes from an 80-acre sod farm in Loxahatchee Groves, Fla., 61 miles north of the stadium. The Dolphins own the sod farm; the team bought the acreage and established the place in 2019 in a quality-control effort ensuring the best field they can have through the year. They can replace the turf, easily, on short notice, with trucks hauling it from an hour away. They change out the grass eight to 10 times a year. This farm can grow about 15 fields at once, and it takes about a year to grow one of the fields to full maturity before it is transplanted. – Peter King, NBC Sports

The issue of playing surface is one that is near and dear to many Miami Dolphins’ hearts right now.  After Jalean Phillips suffered an Achilles tear in the Dolphins’ 34-13 win over the New York Jets in Week 12, several players railed against the stadium’s surface as the culprit.  With Aaron Rodgers also suffering an Achilles tear in the Jets’ first offensive series of the season among other players injured on the surface over the years, there’s plenty to appreciate with the Dolphins’ natural grass surface.

That’s not to say Miami hasn’t had its share of surface issues over the years as it relates to natural grass.  The Miami Hurricanes also use the stadium and at times on the same weekend.  That can lead to the Dolphins playing on a field that’s more chopped up than usual, and especially it if has been raining.

While it doesn’t appear as though there was massive concern with the existing turf being a major hazard given neither the Dolphins or the Hurricanes have played a home game since November 19, it certainly doesn’t hurt to show off a nice, new field to a national audience when the Dolphins and Titans kick off at 8:15 pm ET.
