A tropical weather system still sitting in the Gulf of Mexico may bring an end to what has been a historic dry stretch in the Evansville area.
Tropical Storm Francine is expected to become a hurricane before it makes landfall in Louisiana, and will then crawl north toward the Ohio Valley, bringing with it more than an inch of rain to the Tri-State, the National Weather Service said.
Over the past 39 days, Evansville Regional Airport has recorded just 0.04 inches of rain, including 28 days in a row without measurable precipitation. The result has been a rash of countywide burn bans in Southwestern Indiana and Western Kentucky, and farmers headed to the field to bring in corn and soybean crops that have quickly reached harvest condition amid warm, dry weather.
Hurricane Francine landfall expected in Louisiana
The National Weather Service says Francine should become a hurricane before making landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday afternoon.
From there, it will move north along the Mississippi River and weaken, eventually reaching the Tri-State early Friday.
“As it approaches, showers and storms with heavy rainfall are expected to overspread the (region) on Thursday afternoon and evening,” the weather service’s Paducah, Kentucky, office said. “The area of greatest rainfall will occur across portions of Southeast Missouuri and Western Knetucky Thrusday afternoon/night and may continue into Friday.”
Forecasters said the track of the storm could affect rainfall totals for the region.
