The Outsiders Wins Best Musical and Author S.E. Hinton Gets Emotional Tribute

The Outsiders closed out the 2024 Tonys with the night’s big win: best musical.

As the producers, crew and cast took the stage to accept the award, author S.E. Hinton got a special call-out in the audience.

Hinton wrote The Outsiders as a teenager in the ’60s, and has received “accolades ever since.”

Tearing up, the accepting producer told Hinton, “Susie, I’m here to tell you that your story has forever changed all of our lives. We love you.”

Jonathan Groff Recounts Growing Up Among Cornfields in First Tony Acceptance Speech

Jonathan Groff is a three-time Tony nominee and, now, one-time winner.

In a tear-soaked acceptance speech on Sunday, Groff accepted the best performance by a leading actor in a musical award and recounted his childhood in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, dreaming of Broadway.

“When I was a kid in P.A., I used to record the Tony Awards on a VHS tape and watch the performances over and over again,” said Groff. ” . . . To actually be a part of making theatre in this city . . . has been the greatest gift and pleasure of my life.”

Praising his parents for allowing him let his “freak flag to fly” amid the cornfields, he told them, “I walk through life with an open heart because you let me know that I could.”

He also praised his Merrily We Roll Along costars Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, both crying in their seats. “You are more than old friends, you are soulmates,” said Groff.

Moon won lead actress in a musical for portraying Ali in Hell’s Kitchen. Ali is the main character in the show, which is a semi-autobiographical look at music icon Alicia Keys’ life.

Moon was visibly emotional as she made her way down the aisle, fighting back happy sobs as she accepted a hug from Keys.

Among those honored were Chita Rivera, Christopher Durang, Louis Gossett Jr., Ron Cephas Jones, Alan Arkin, Glenda Jackson and Treat Williams.

Ahead of Scherzinger’s moment onstage, Shields spoke about the In Memoriam being “bittersweet.”

“For every well-known artist, there are countless others whose contributions both onstage and behind the scenes forever changed Broadway,” said Shields.

“Susie Hinton wrote The Outsiders in high school,” Jolie told the N.Y.C. crowd. “A half a century later, it still speaks to us. Society changes, but the experience of being an outsider is universal. To any young person, any person feeling on the outside, you are not wrong to see what is unfair, and you are not wrong to wish to find your own path. As the cast raise their voices, I hope it inspires many of you watching to value yours.”

Tony nominees Brody Grant and Sky Lakota-Lynch lead the full company in singing the show’s “Tulsa ‘67,” before Joshua Boone sang “Grease Got a Hold.”

The performance then concluded with the cast in a rumble dance sequence, with real rain falling onto the stage and some of the actors’ faces getting covered in faux blood.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took the stage to introduce the performance of Suffs, a musical she produced.

“I have stood on a lot of stages, but this is very special,” said Clinton. “And I know a little bit about how hard it is to make change. So I am really proud of this original American musical by Shaina Taub, now two-time Tony winner.”

Explaining that the show is about the 1913 women’s movement, Clinton added, “It’s almost impossible to think about what a challenge that was. But now, it’s an election year and we need to be reminded about how important it is to vote.”

The full cast of Suffs, led by Taub — who won best book of a musical and best original score on Sunday — sang “Keep Marching.”

American playwright David Adjmi accepted the honor on behalf of the production, and spoke about the journey to getting his show made.

“It’s really hard to make a career in the arts,” said Adjmi. “We need to fund the arts in America. It is the hallmark of a civilized society.”

Host Ariana DeBose then re-entered the stage, saying, “I literally would not be here if it weren’t for Chita Rivera.” Added DeBose, “Because of her, I am. Chita, from all of us, we will always love you!”

She then broke into some of the “America” choreography. DeBose won an Oscar for portraying Anita in the recent film adaptation of West Side Story by Stephen Spielberg.

Best Revival of a Play Goes to Appropriate

Appropriate is back and better than ever. Really — it just won best revival of a play at the 2024 Tonys.

Producer Carole Rothman and author Branden Jacobs-Jenkins accepted the award — presented by Jim Parsons — on behalf of the production.

“It is a joy and an honor to be standing here with the family of Appropriate,” said Rothman.

The play centers on a trio of siblings who return to their father’s Arkansas house after his death to deal with the remains of his estate. Mysterious objects are discovered among the man’s clutter, however, unearthing secrets and buried tension.

Redmayne took the stage with the rest of the Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club cast to sing “Willkommen” from the revival musical. Redmayne playes the Emcee in Cabaret and is nominated on Sunday night.

His costar Gayle Rankin, who portrays Sally Bowles, briefly appeared during the high-energy performance. She, too, is a 2024 Tony nominee.

During her largely emotional speech, Lewis humorously praised her loved ones for indulging her as a child when she watched herself cry in the mirror to see if she “looked like an actress.”

“I have had so many amazing experiences and some heartbreaking ones too,” said Lewis. Adding, “This moment is the one I dreamed of for more of those 40 years. So I say to everyone who can hear my voice, don’t give up.”

To castmates Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, he said, “I will miss you so much. I don’t have to act in this show, I just have to look at you and feel how I want to feel. I will never have it this good again. Thank you.”

The Water for Elephants Brings the Tonys to the Big Top

On Broadway or under the big top? It’s unclear with the Water for Elephants cast onstage.

Led by Grant Gustin, the cast performed a medley of songs, starting with “Anywhere/Another Train” before transitioning into “The Road Don’t Make You Young.”

Water for Elephants follows Jacob Jankowski, a veterinarian who joins a traveling circus and falls in love with a talented performer named Marlena — and a misunderstood elephant.

The musical is based on the 2006 book of the same name and was previously made into a movie with Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon.

Best direction of a play was presented first, to Daniel Aukin of Stereophonic.

Danya Taymor won best direction of a musical for The Outsiders — while holding her high heels in her hand.

“Directing The Outsiders changed my life,” said Taymor during her speech, also calling out the “great women who have lifted me up” — and name-checking (a teary!) producer Angelina Jolie and the original author, S.E. Hinton.

Pete Townshend Plays Guitar Onstage for The Who’s Tommy Performance

The Who’s co-founder Pete Townshend made an appearance onstage to introduce the performance of The Who’s Tommy, which he wrote the music and lyrics for, and co-wrote the book.

Ariana DeBose Kicks Off the Tonys with Opening Musical Number ‘This Party’s for You’

She’s at it again!

Ariana DeBose captivated the Tonys audience with a high-energy opening musical number, which she performed in a gold mini dress (an original Bob Mackie!).

The song — called “This Party’s for You” — featured music and lyrics by Tom Kitt, Amanda Green (both of whom DeBose worked with on Bring It On: The Musical) and Adam Blackstone (co-orchestrator of Hell’s Kitchen). DeBose told the crowd that she choreographed the dance herself.

During her opening monologue, DeBose spoke about the importance of art. “The collective experience can cross boundaries and unite people from all walks of life,” DeBose said.

Billy Porter Sings and Gets Emotional During Tonys Speech

Billy Porter fought back tears as he spoke about his late mother from the Tonys stage on June 16, quoting her favorite Bible verse as he read his speech from his phone.

“She believed in unconditional love and she instilled in my sister and I a purpose and a love greater than ourselves,” he said of his mom Cloerinda.

Porter received the Isabelle Stevenson Award, which recognizes a member of the theater community who has made a substantial contribution on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations.

The actor was recognized for his work with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation and the Entertainment Community Fund, among other groups.

George C. Wolfe Wins the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement

During his speech, Wolfe spoke about coming to New York City from Kentucky for the first time at age 15.

“I came to New York with my mother and we saw a bunch of musicals and plays, including a revival of West Side Story on this very stage,” recounted Wolfe. “I knew then I was going to go to New York. I’m from Frankfort, Kentucky, I knew I was going to move to New York. I knew that I was going to work in the theater. Alicia Keys’ new semi-autobiographical musical, Hell’s Kitchen, is a 13-time nominee on Sunday, and Keys herself is set to take the stage in a surprise performance with JAY-Z.

Keys certainly looked ready for her big moment, matching the red carpet in a sparkling crimson gown by Roberto Coin. She accessorized with over-the-elbow globes and a thing waist belt. Her earings, also Roberto Coin, were 18K White Gold Diamante that retail for $9,970.

Third times the charm for Ariana DeBose, who hit the red carpet at the 2024 Tony Awards in a pastel Oscar de la Renta gown the looked like stained glass.

In video posted to her Instagram account, DeBose waved to fans as she walked through N.Y.C.’s Lincoln Center plaza ahead of her third hosting gig.

DeBose told PEOPLE ahead of the show that this will be her final year hosting — for now.  “I am really craving being back on stage, in a larger way than simply hosting the Tonys,” she explained. “And for that reason, this will probably be one of the last times I host for a while, so someone else can hold the ropes.”
