Game 1 vs the Reds

CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs did not take advantage of their opportunities against the Brewers and the Cardinals. In fact, it was quite the opposite. But they’ve got eight winnable games ahead of them against the Reds and White Sox. The winning needs to start RIGHT NOW. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for Game 1 against the Reds at Wrigley Field.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

  1. Mike Tauchman, DH
  2. Seiya Suzuki, RF
  3. Cody Bellinger, 1B
  4. Chris Morel, 3B
  5. Ian Happ, LF
  6. Nico Hoerner, 2B
  7. Dansby Swanson, SS
  8. Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF
  9. Yan Gomes, C

Every day PCA finds himself in the Cubs lineup, one of the other outfielders or Michael Busch will have to sit. Today, it’s Busch, with Happ in left, Suzuki in right, Bellinger at first, and Mike Tauchman at DH. A five-man rotation for four spots is pretty wild, but maybe this will help the Cubs play the matchups better and keep everyone rested.

PCA bats eighth this afternoon, between Dansby Swanson and Yan Gomes. Everyone else is in their usual spots in the Cubs batting order.

Cincinnati Reds Lineup:

  1. TJ Friedl, CF
  2. Elly De La Cruz, SS
  3. Jeimer Candlario, 3B
  4. Spencer Steer, 1B
  5. Jake Fraley, RF
  6. Tyler Stephenson, C
  7. Nick Martini, DH
  8. Jonathan India, 2B
  9. Will Benson, LF

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Javier Assad, RHP

Javier Assad got hit around a bit by the Cardinals in his last start, with four earned runs scoring on five hits, three walks, and two homers. He did strike out eight batters, but it was his second disappointing outing in a row … though the game prior was against the Braves, who are not only very good, but also had just seen Assad the start prior. The Reds are the second worst team in MLB versus right-handed pitching this season (81 wRC+). But they are likely going to run wild if they do reach base. So prepare for that.

Cincinnati Reds: Graham Ashcraft, RHP

Graham Ashcraft has made ten starts so far this season, and only three have been quality starts. And in the four games since his last quality start, Ashcraft has allowed 14 earned runs in 19.1 IP (6.52 ERA) with almost as many walks (10) as strikeouts (13). Please, for the love of god, let that continue today.
