Germany border checks unacceptable, says Luxembourg

Germany’s decision to introduce controls at its border crossings with Luxembourg is not being carried out as agreed, Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden said on Thursday.

Germany has decided to up security along its borders with all nine neighbouring countries for the month-long Euro 2024 football tournament, which begins on Friday, when thousands of fans will descend on the country.

Motorists have already faced delays this week on the Trier and Saar motorways, and in Schengen, the Luxemburger Wort reported on Wednesday.

Checks are being carried out on bridges and in a more uniform manner than was previously agreed between the two countries, Luxembourg’s home affairs minister said.

“It was not agreed that way. It was agreed that the checks would not take place on bridges, but rather in the hinterland, and that only random checks would be carried out,” Gloden said. “We cannot accept that,” he added.

The controls were reminiscent of those imposed by Germany during the Covid-19 pandemic, Gloden said, which he added “should not be repeated”.

Gloden said he had raised the issue with his German counterpart Nancy Faeser on the sidelines of a meeting of EU Home Affairs Ministers on Thursday in Luxembourg. “Nancy Faeser assured me that she would take care of it,” said Gloden.

Luxembourg’s police force has also contacted Germany’s police service to discuss concerns about the controls, the Wort reported.
