Here’s Uluwatu So Big They Broke Out the Skis and Tow Ropes

More foam? Or time for the rope?

The folks who surf Uluwatu often are the kind of folks whose step ups don’t collect much dust. The lefthander has its fair share of days that call for a little extra foam and fewer heads bobbing in the lineup. But there’s a level we see beyond that about once a year where the skis gets fueled up and tow ropes are taken out. This is one of those days.

However, the crowd wasn’t so thin simply because the waves were big and the weekend warriors on holiday got scared off. This particular session was dug up and posted recently after a few years of sitting in the archives — a flashback to the 2020 COVID-19 summer that saw most travel around the world grind to a halt. There were a handful of surfers around the world who found themselves stranded at the beginning of it all in March and there were a handful of blokes who leaned into the hand they’d been dealt because, well, what the hell were most of them gonna do back home anyway?

I have no clue if that’s what happened to the hellmen in this video. In all likelihood, many of them live on Bali and enjoyed that tiny window of time when crowds were thinner and getting a few late-July waves on a bombing day didn’t require navigating hordes of tourists.
