Manchester United lost once again in the Premier League.
It was a really depleting performance from Erik ten Hag‘s side. Manchester United, once again, could simply not get going.
Goal-scoring is becoming a serious issue for the Red Devils. In the Premier League, Manchester United have scored just 18 goals in 18 games, which has contributed to breaking a 31-year-old record.
A lot lies in the front three. They were simply not good enough against West Ham.
Alan Shearer on Manchester United’s attack
It doesn’t take a football analyst to identify there is a fundamental problem with Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund up top.
They just have not gelled. This is leading to Manchester United not even creating chances – never mind goals.
Alan Shearer picked up on the distinct lack of cohesion on BBC’s Match of the Day after stats were shown comparing the two United clubs’ front three with their goals and assists.
MORE UNITED STORIES
“It’s really embarrassing from a Manchester United point of view. 18 goals this season they’ve scored,” Shearer begins.
He then analysed a couple of chances, where there was a recurring theme:
“This is a brilliant run from Bruno Fernandes, but look where your two wide men are in Garnacho and Antony. They have just one player in the box. How on earth are you going to score goals like that?”
There was a particular moment which Shearer believed should have infuriated Scott McTominay.
“Watch the overlap here from Scott McTominay. He runs about 50 yards to get around him [Antony]. I’d be going berserk if he doesn’t pass to me there. But again he comes inside and into the traffic, losing the ball.”
Are Alejandro Garnacho and Antony too one-dimensional?
An interesting point Shearer picked up on was both wingers coming inside far too often, and this is ringing true.
Particularly Antony, being predominantly one-footed, United wingers keep cutting inside and running into traffic.
We spent £64m on a striker, who is getting no service and a lot of that has to be put down to the wingers. The front three do not work together. Something needs to change in 2024.
