Kevin Costner’s latest public appearance was a notable family affair, marking a special occasion and a rare appearance at the Cannes Film Festival.

On May 19 the 69-year-old actor walked the red carpet for the premiere of his new film, Horizon: An American Saga, accompanied by five of his seven children. Costner was joined by his daughters Annie, 40, and Lily, 37, from his marriage to Cindy Silva, as well as Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 13, from his marriage to his most recent ex-wife, Christine Baumgartner.

Notably absent were his other children, Joe, 36 (also from his marriage to Silva), and Liam, 26 (from his relationship with Bridget Rooney). Also missing was his rumored girlfriend, Jewel, whom he has been linked to since December.

For the premiere, the Mr. Brooks actor and his sons wore matching classic black tuxedos with bow ties, while his daughters chose elegant light colored gowns. The family coordinated their looks with matching black sunglasses as they posed for photos on the red carpet.

Inside the theater, the actor received a 7-minute standing ovation for the film, which he also directed, produced, and wrote. Costner’s son Hayes also made his acting debut in the film, which has been years in the making.

The western project apparently may have played a role in the sudden end of fan favorite show, Yellowstone. Tensions reportedly arose between Costner and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, due to scheduling conflicts and disagreements over pay, leading to the series’ abrupt conclusion in May. The disputes are said to have involved Costner’s commitment to Horizon, which will be a two-part film series, with part one set to release in summer 2024. The film marks Costner’s first directorial effort since 2003’s Open Range.

In an interview with Variety, Costner explained, “The Horizon films are separate stories that interlink,” covering a 15-year period around the Civil War and the settlement of America’s Western frontier.
