New Report Sheds Light On Why ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ Isn’t On Xbox

Black Myth: Wukong is the biggest game in the world with 10 million copies sold almost instantly. But none of them on Xbox.

Despite launching on both PC and PS5 at launch, and with no PlayStation exclusivity deal in place, the game is not out on Xbox, apparently for technical reasons. We’ve had few details about the nature of that, with many instinctively blaming it on Xbox Series S, but now we may know a little more.

According to Spanish Xbox leaker eXtas1s, he claims to have spoken to Xbox developers at Gamescom about the nature of the issue and the timeline for a fix:

“The game is reportedly suffering from a bug known as “Memory Leak,” which can cause significant crashes that could compromise the performance of your Xbox console. Due to this issue, the game has not passed Xbox’s bug detection tests and has therefore been indefinitely delayed until they manage to optimize the game for Series X|S.

The studio is already working hard to resolve this issue and achieve the necessary certification. Once they get approval, they plan to set a release date for the game, but they don’t yet know when or how, but other than that error the game is “close to being ready.”

So, the idea here is that the Memory Leak is specific to Xbox for some reason and not an easy fix, given the very unfortunate delay here as Microsoft did not need a situation where they do not have access to one of the biggest games of the year when their competitor had not even bought a time exclusive deal to keep it from them. You may recall something at least somewhat similar happened with Baldur’s Gate 3 last year, albeit that was about Xbox Series S not being able to do split-screen multiplayer.

I will circle back to what has officially been said about this. Here’s the Game Science statement which talks about optimization:

“We are currently optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards,” Game Science said, “so it won’t release simultaneously with the other platforms. We apologize for the delay and aim to minimize the wait for Xbox users. We will announce the release date as soon as it meets our quality standards.”

And then here’s the official Xbox line with even less detail, and Microsoft will not say anything else when asked. I’ve tried:

“We’re excited for the launch of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms. We can’t comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders, but we remain focused on making Xbox the best platform for gamers, and great games are at the center of that.”

So insider info is really all we have, and a damaging memory leak may be the culprit. Hopefully it’s fixed soon and Xbox players get a much needed win after a tough year. Or a much-needed tie, at least.
