Oklahoma City restaurant will close months after opening

The Midtown District restaurant Alma announced it will close less than three months after opening.

In June, the restaurant’s grand opening nearly ended in disaster after a storm knocked out power and damaged equipment just three days after launch.

The restaurant’s owners said in a recent post on Alma’s Instagram account that they had decided to close and thanked employees and customers:

We have decided to close our doors at Alma. We would like to thank our bar manager, bartenders, servers, sous chef, line cooks and last but not least our dishwasher Glenda for making this place a success. It is just time to move on to what is important in our mission in life and what we are called to do. Non-profits, helping the homeless and helping women and children that need help in our community. We wish everyone the best and THANKS to all our customers that came and enjoyed some delicious food at our place! Never stop supporting local farms and local restaurants they all need your help in this community. We love you and thanks!

When it opened, Alma filled a space at 320 NW 10 that was formerly occupied by Ludivine. The restaurant was created by longtime executive chef Zach Hutton and his wife, Kayla Hutton, who served as general manager. Like the pair’s earlier Paseo-based restaurant Scratch, Alma used ingredients sourced largely from local farms and producers with a focus on sustainability, quality and reduced waste.

Just days after it opened, however, a storm knocked out power but also damaged a refrigerator and freezer, which were expenses that the restaurant said were not covered by insurance.

“The transformer behind the building exploded and fried the condenser on both the walk-in cooler and freezer on our third day open. We lost two weeks worth of prep and about $10,000 worth of food, give or take, and it was just a loss we had to eat,” Zach Hutton told The Oklahoman last month.

Alma was also forced to shut down for a week as they waited for replacements.
