Sneaky hot spell coming into all of Michigan

While it’s not a headline grabbing sizzler, we do have a stretch of hot days coming to Michigan. Here’s a look at the hot weather through the weekend.

What is a hot spell? Is there an exact definition of a hot spell? No there isn’t. It’s more a judgement call, and with 35 years of weather forecasting in the Great Lakes region I feel I have the credentials to deem it a hot spell or a not-hot spell.

For Michiganders we will call this a hot spell.

This hot spell isn’t just based off afternoon temperatures cracking into the 90s here in Michigan. It’s also based off the high humidity that will accompany each hot day. In fact the actual afternoon temperatures are going to hover right around 90 degrees. This is why I say it’s not a headline grabbing sizzler. An actual temperature around 90 with high humidity will make five afternoons feel like 95 degrees or more.

Here are the high temperatures each day through Sunday.

Basically all of Lower Michigan with have an afternoon high temperature between 88 degree and 92 degrees from today through Sunday. There may be a patch of thunderstorms over southern Michigan Friday. While this may keep the temperature down into the mid-80s it will also boost the humidity that day. It will end up feeling like 90 again with that combination of 85 degrees and even higher humidity.

What’s the hottest day overall? Saturday should be the hottest day for all of Michigan.

This is also the type of weather situation where left-over lingering storm clouds keep it from feeling really hot one minute. As soon as the clouds break at your location the temperature soars into the low-90s.

So let’s just call today through Sunday a hot spell for us here in Michigan, especially when we factor in high humidity. Enjoy it if you are a summer-lover. My next two articles here on the MLive Weather page will be about when the hot spell ends and more importantly a headline that reads, “It’s all downhill from here on temperatures.”
