A man remains jailed on a murder charge following a fatal shooting in Socorro last week.
Oscar Rene Rodriguez, 39, is accused in the shooting death of Joel Holguin, 36, during an argument on Thursday, Aug. 1, on Valle Verde Road in Socorro, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.

Socorro police responded to a report of a fatal shooting in the 11500 block of Valle Verde Road. After the shooting, officers learned that Rodriguez had returned to his home on the same block, located near Walcott Road.

The Socorro Police Department asked the Major Crimes Unit of the Sheriff’s Office for assistance in investigating the homicide.
The sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (formerly known as the SWAT team) and the Crisis Negotiation Team were deployed to Rodriguez’s home, where he surrendered to negotiators, the Sheriff’s Office stated.

Sheriff’s officials said that Rodriguez allegedly confessed to fatally shooting Holguin. A reason for the argument has not been disclosed.
Rodriguez, of Socorro, remains held on a $500,000 bond at the El Paso County Jail in Downtown.
