Capcom and SNK are collaborating again in a big way with Street Fighter 6’s next batch of DLC characters set to feature two guest fighters from some of the latter’s largest fighting game franchises. Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui of Fatal Fury and King of Fighters fame are going to be joining the SF6 roster in Season 2, and this surprising team up has raised a lot of questions with fans.
Fighting game legend and prominent FGC content creator Justin Wong recently got the opportunity to sit down with the developers of Street Fighter 6 to ask them the burning questions we all currently have. In this interview, Street Fighter 6 Director Takayuki Nakayama and Producer Shuhei Matsumoto tell us more about Season 2, and most importantly, speak about what the collaboration with SNK could mean for the Capcom vs. SNK series.
Getting right into it, Justin Wong prompted the developers with a question regarding Capcom vs. SNK. Naturally, seeing that the two companies have been able to officially collaborate on a grand scale like this in 2024 has a lot of people wondering what that might mean for the fan-favorite series, with implications being that if they could navigate through licensing enough to make this happen perhaps they could make something CvS related once more.
“Does [Street Fighter 6] Season 2 open up conversations for a possible return of the CVS series?” Justin asked. Fortunately, Nakayama and Matsumoto’s response is enlightening.
“In terms of a brand new [Capcom vs. SNK] game, that’s something that they would love to make,” Nakayama and Matsumoto’s translator said on behalf of the two. “They would love to continue talking to SNK and see what they can do to make it happen.”
They go on to explain that this collaboration, hopefully, is a strong opportunity for SNK to showcase their characters more as well and broaden their reach to newer audiences who might not be as familiar with them.
Unfortunately, the developers note that no decisions have been made on this front just yet. So, while the prospect probably has the best chance of being made that it’s had in a very long time, nothing appears to be planned at this point in time.
Nakayama and Matsumoto reiterate that they themselves are fans of CvS and SNK’s fighting games, so it’s clear they have personal interest in such a project. We recently learned that Terry and Mai joining Street Fighter 6 was also a decision made as somewhat of a passion project aimed at bolstering up fighting games as a whole instead of just trying to garner the most success within Street Fighter 6 itself.
This crossover with SNK and Capcom also has people wondering if we might see the inverse and have Street Fighter characters as guests in SNK’s upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. While we haven’t gotten any information on that particularly, SNK did make an announcement just the other day that definitely piqued a lot of fan interest.
We recently learned that 2022’s King of Fighters 15 is actually going to be receiving more DLC characters in the future, with SNK Producer Yasuyuki Oda saying in an interview that they’re not quite done with support for the game just yet. He noted that the company has “a few more characters” planned for the game, and following this interview, SNK made an announcement about “Special” DLC coming to the game.
“Special DLC character development confirmed!” wrote the official SNK Twitter account. “Details will be announced at Evo 2024! Stay tuned!”
A while back, there were rumors and speculation going around that King of Fighters 15 would receive a “Team Capcom” set of DLC that would add three Street Fighter characters as playable to the game. Given the Street Fighter 6 collaboration we’re seeing with Season 2 and the sudden announcement that KOF15 is getting more DLC after its own season 2 concluded some time ago, this now has a lot of folks thinking King of Fighters 15 is going to get their long awaited Capcom collaboration.
It’s also worth mentioning that SNK’s wording on this seems to imply that the upcoming KOF15 DLC will be unique and special, potentially meaning it won’t be a full-fledged season of content, but rather, a one-off thing. This adds further credence to the theory that it could be Team Street Fighter, though we just don’t know for sure yet.
