A woman was killed in a shooting that led to a nearly nine-hour standoff inside a home on Kansas City’s East Side, a police spokesman said.
Police responded to the shooting just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 500 block of Booth Avenue in the North Blue Ridge neighborhood of Kansas City, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.
Arriving officers contacted the caller in front of the house, who said there was a woman inside who had been shot, Becchina said. The caller also told officers that a person possibly involved in the shooting might also be inside.
As officers approached the home, they saw the victim unresponsive on the floor. Becchina said officers entered the home and evacuated the woman to a safe distance from the house. Meanwhile, other officers surrounded the residence to prevent anyone who might have been involved from escaping.
Emergency medical crews responded to the scene and took the victim to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after, Becchina said.
Officers called for an Operation 100, a tactical response that brings additional officers and resources to a standoff scene. During the ensuing hours, tactical officers coordinated with homicide detectives to work on the surrender of the person inside.
At about 6 a.m., officers cleared the home, and found and arrested a man who is a person of interest in the homicide, Becchina said.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine what led up to the shooting, Becchina said.
