SIOUX FALLS, S.D. —- #3 Minnesota State suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon as it fell to #17 Augustana 28-10.

With the loss, MSU drops to 7-1, including a 6-1 NSIC record. With the win, AU improves to 8-0, including a 7-0 conference record.

“Well I thought the score resembled how we played” head coach Todd Hoffner said. “Augustana played really well and controlled the line of scrimmage.

“We need to do a better job of putting our players in better positions to make plays. We’ll need to refocus and find a way to move forward.”

After a scoreless first quarter, the Mavericks broke the ice on the first drive of the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead. The Mavericks drove 31 yards in 11 plays to set up a 24-yard field for junior Matthew Jaeger.

Later in the second quarter the Maverick defense recovered a fumble on the MSU 18 courtesy of senior Shawn Brodie. MSU then drove down to the AU 35 but an interception by Logan Leonard gave the Vikings the ball back on their own 14. One play later, Jarod Epperson ran 86 yards for the touchdown to put AU up 7-3. Both teams would then head into the locker room with Augie leading 7-3 at halftime.

Augustana got the lone score in the third quarter as Bauman hooked up with Epperson on a 35-yard touchdown pass to put the Vikings up 14-3 with 6:26 to go in the third quarter. AU then went up 21-3 with 3:53 to go in the game as Rashad Lampkin finished a nine-play drive with a one-yard touchdown carry.

The Mavericks responded with a quick scoring drive as MSU went 75 yards in eight plays, including a four-yard touchdown pass from junior Hayden Ekern to sophomore Jeremiah Howard, to cut Augie’s lead to 21-10 with 1:37 to go.

After recovering the onside kick, Augie scored the final touchdown of the game as Bauman found Logan Uttecht on a 23-yard touchdown pass to bring the final score to 28-10.

Ekern finished his day with 181 passing yards and one touchdown pass. Nine Mavericks caught at least one pass, including freshman Andrew Laplant who led the team with 36 receiving yards. Ekern also led the Mavericks in rushing yards with 48.

Senior Jacob Daulton led the Maverick defense with six tackles, while junior Joey Goettl notched five. Brodie tallied three tackles and a fumble recovery as well.

Minnesota State returns home on Saturday, October 28, to take on the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., at Blakeslee Stadium.
