Can my boss stop me from going skiing on vacation?

I can’t stand the thought of going back to work after the holidays, but I’ve been told this is a bad time to look for a new job because of so many other people feeling that way. Is this true? Should I wait?

Oh, come on now. What happened to new year, new you positivity, leaving the past behind and looking forward to exciting new possibilities? Oh, I forgot — that’s just in holiday Hallmark movies.

Some people actually can’t wait to get back to work after all of the stress associated with the holidays. As for when to look for a job, just as you can’t time the stock market, you can’t predict the job market.

The best time to look is when you are ready, with the right mindset, skills, experience, focus, strategy and support to launch the search.

You never know when the right opportunity will emerge. But the wrong time is when you are feeling down or negative, because that will show and will impact your search

I work in a tax accountancy and was planning on going skiing in January but my boss has said that since we’re coming into our busiest season, I can’t go because he’s worried I’ll get hurt and be out of commission. I don’t think how I spend my time off is any of his concern. Am I right?

Why? Because you can’t crunch numbers with your leg in a cast? Does he feel that you can’t manage moguls as well as spreadsheets? I have many more fun snark about which activities might impact an accountant’s ability to do their job, but it is the holiday season, and I only want to spread joy.

Professional athletes have restrictions that specifically prohibit them from engaging in certain activities that could be risky to their health, impacting their ability to do their job, but the short answer to you is no, your boss can’t dictate how you spend your vacation. They can dictate when you take vacation however, and perhaps that’s the bigger concern if the time you want to take is during crunch time for the company.
