Cher Explains Why the ‘Believe’ 25th Anniversary ‘Pisses’ Her Off

Cher’s 1998 smash album Believe, and its still glorious title-track, turn 25 this year — but definitely do not bring that up to Cher.

Asked about Believe’s anniversary, and how “amazing” it was, in a new interview on Today, Cher did not miss a beat, quipping, “It’s not that amazing, ok?” With a laugh, she added: “It pisses the fuck out of me!”

The pop legend proceeded to speak candidly about her thoughts on aging. She acknowledged that her mother, the singer-songwriter and actress Georgia Holt “didn’t mind” getting older, but stated plainly, “I do. I hate it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Cher spoke about the challenges she’s faced writing her memoir. “It’s very difficult because I’ve lived too long and I’ve done too many things. So, it would have to be an encyclopedia, truthfully.”

Back in October, Cher released her first-ever holiday album, aptly titled, Christmas. The 13-track LP features Cher’s takes on some Christmas classics, and includes duets with Stevie Wonder, Darlene Love, Cyndi Lauper, and Michael Bublé. It also includes four new originals, including lead single “DJ Play a Christmas Song” (recently performed at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade), as well as “Drop Top Sleigh Ride” featuring Tyga.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Love spoke about collaborating with Cher on a new version of her holiday classic, “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” — on which Cher originally provided background vocals.

“The whole thing only took an hour,” Love said. “They legitimately just wanted me to sing it the way I sing it when I perform it live, which is amazing. We got it in just four takes. They said, ‘That’s it. We got what we want.’ And I had no idea what they were going to do with it until I heard the final product, but we sing the verses together in unison. I was really surprised by how wonderful it turned out.”
