The country music world was stunned Wednesday by reports that stars Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires have filed for divorce.

The couple has been together for 11 years, and have an 8-year-old daughter, Mercy.
PEOPLE reported that the 45-year-old Isbell and 41-year-old Shires actually filed for divorce back on Dec. 15. The site called the couple a “music force,” noting that Shires is a backup singer and fiddle player in Isbell’s band, and Isbell plays guitar for her group, “The Highwomen.”
“This hurts my heart a little, I gotta say,” one person wrote on X, formerly Twitter, in response to Rolling Stone’s article about the split. “Wishing them both peace and happiness.”
“Awww that sucks,” another wrote. “They were a true Americana power-couple.”
“I am …. Actually legitimately shocked,” another wrote.
And there were plenty more comments like that across social media following the reports.
That said, per PEOPLE, the two have been open about marital issues in the past, and even included it in a documentary, “Running With Our Eyes Closed,” back in 2023.
