Another massive storm system sweeps through today with moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds. The heaviest rain and strongest winds could come through during the evening with even some thunder in the mix. The rain tapers by around midnight and drier weather wins out tomorrow, but those pesky winds hang around. Yet another big storm arrives later on Friday, with chilly air filtering in behind it during the holiday weekend.

Today (Tuesday): Cloudy as rain develops across the area during the morning hours with moderate to heavy intensity at times by this afternoon. Winds from the southeast at 10 to 15 mph this morning increase to 25-30 mph by afternoon, with gusts to near 40 mph. Temperatures reach the mild 50s by mid- to late afternoon. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Rain persists into the evening and we could see a band of particularly heavy rain, possibly some thunder, and stronger wind gusts up to 40-50 mph (maybe 50-60 mph near the Chesapeake Bay) between 7 p.m. and midnight before tapering. Rain totals should reach 1.5 to 2.5 inches, with localized amounts up to around 3 inches possible. Meanwhile, evening temperatures keep climbing, through the 50s to perhaps near 60, before collapsing overnight behind a cold front with lows in the low to mid-40s. Confidence: Medium

Friday starts partly to mostly sunny early, but then clouds return before rain probably arrives late afternoon into evening. Saturday should start off the holiday weekend with variable skies, gusty winds and temperatures in the 40s to near 50, followed by a colder Saturday night with lows in the 20s to near 30. Partly to mostly sunny and still breezy Sunday with cold highs in the upper 30s to low 40s. Sunday night could see a few clouds with lows in the 20s. Confidence: Medium

The early outlook at MLK Monday is increasing clouds with continued chilly highs in the 30s to near 40 and a chance of rain or snow by late in the day or evening. Confidence: Low
