GARFIELD − A fire erupted at DP’s pub early Friday morning, resulting in extensive damage to the building and leaving the owner to consider the restaurant’s next steps.

The Garfield Fire Department responded to a call reporting a structure fire at about 2:45 a.m., finding the blaze on the first floor, which later spread to the second, according to Capt. Mario Pozo.

Two residents on the second floor were treated for smoke inhalation and were released on the scene. One firefighter was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for smoke inhalation, Pozo said.

The fire was knocked down by 4:06 a.m.

Garfield Mayor Richard Rigoglioso said the fire is a tragic event for the city.

“Our immediate focus is on supporting the owners, employees and residents who lived upstairs of DP’s during this difficult time,” he said. “We will ensure that all necessary resources are available to those affected.”

The pub’s owner, Anthony Garcia, said the seafood restaurant has been catering to locals for a while now. “It sucks this happened but nobody is (seriously) hurt.”

Garcia got the pub in 2019, a little before the pandemic. It’s the first restaurant of his own. “It’s a lot to take in right now, but hopefully we will be back soon,” he said.

The pub is known for having good seafood; most of the food is made in-house, according to its website. It’s been a local favorite pub for over 50 years. DP’s was known as Steve’s Bar as early as the 1930s, and was taken over by Nelson Kelly in the ’60s, and operated as Kelly’s Tavern.

In the early ’70s the bar was purchased by a man named Anthony with some help from friends Dominic and Pete, and the name was changed to DP’s Pub, its website states.
