Free tetanus shots in Omaha for storm clean-up crews

Anyone who incurs a scrape or shallow puncture wound while cleaning up storm debris in the Omaha area can get a tetanus shot from the Douglas County Health Department.

A free tetanus vaccine clinic will be open Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Common Ground Community Center, 1701 Veterans Dr. in the Elkhorn neighborhood. The health department recommends that people involved in cleaning up debris from Friday’s storm have a recent tetanus vaccination.

The violent storms that devastated parts of Douglas County created high-risk conditions for tetanus, according to Dr. Lindsay Huse, the department’s director. Shots are needed if it has been over five years since the last tetanus vaccine.

People with more serious wounds such as deep puncture wounds, dirty wounds or wounds requiring stitches should seek treatment from medical provider immediately. Additional tetanus information can be found at the health department’s website
