Guinea-Bissau midfielder Opa Sangante lashes ball into own net in nightmare mistake against Nigeria in their AFCON group match

  • Opa Sangante had a stroke of bad luck while marking Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen
  • The midfielder smacked the ball into his own net after it was fizzed into the box
  • What on earth is going on at Newcastle?! Uncertainty over Joelinton and Callum Wilson, while Kieran Trippier leaving will be a slap in the face – It’s All Kicking Off

Opa Sangante scored a clinical half-volley in Guinea-Bissau’s AFCON match against Nigeria – but it was in the wrong net.

The Guinea-Bissau midfielder lashed the ball over his own goalkeeper to gift Nigeria a 1-0 lead 36 minutes into the game.

Sangante looked dismayed as the Nigeria players wheeled away in celebration, knowing his side needed a win.

He had been marking Victor Osimhen and did so effectively, besides the stroke of misfortune which saw his miskick end up on the wrong side of the bar.

If there was any shred of comfort to be had, it was that Osimhen, the African Footballer of the Year who scored 31 goals for Napoli last season, would likely have done the same.

Moses Simon had fizzed a wicked ball into the area, low and pacey, presenting it on a plate for any attackers – and a nightmare for defenders to deal with.

Guinea-Bissau had lost their first two games to the Ivory Coast (2-0) and Equatorial Guinea (4-2).

Therefore, they knew they had to get a win against Nigeria to stand any chance of qualifying from their group.

That was always going to be a tall order against three-time champions Nigeria.

Nigeria are ranked 42nd in the FIFA World rankings, whereas Guinea-Bissau sit 103rd.
