Here’s a guide to New Year’s Eve in Utah for dining and parties

Ella Fitzgerald wasn’t the first to ask, but she may have most famously posed the question: What are you doing New Year’s Eve?

Several restaurants along the Wasatch Front are planning special menus or discounts on Sunday — the last night of 2023. There also are events happening to ring out the old year, as well as music venues inviting ticket buyers to dance until midnight.

Here’s a roundup of some of the major happenings in Utah to mark the arrival of 2024.

Dining on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day

Last Hurrah 2023! • The Gateway, 50 S. Rio Grande St., Salt Lake City • Buskers, pop-up bars and live performances — headlined by the bands Blindlove and Cardinal Bloom — are included in what’s billed as “Utah’s largest countdown to the new year,” from 8 p.m. to midnight on Sunday, Dec. 31. Free to attend, though bring cash or a credit card for the drinks (draft beer, wine, hot cocktails and hot chocolate) available in the main plaza. Some Gateway merchants will be open late, too.

Ball Drop 2024 • Mountain America Expo Center, 9575 S. State St., Sandy • Also billing itself “Utah’s largest New Year’s celebration,” this event (for anyone 18 and older) promises five DJ’s, aerial performers, giveaways, and more. The event on Sunday, Dec. 31, runs from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are $25, at thepartytix.ticketsauce.com.

Gold and Glitter New Year’s Gala • The Leonardo, 209 E. 500 South, Salt Lake City • The Leonardo is throwing a New Year’s bash, Sunday, Dec. 31, 9:30 p.m.-1 a.m. Catered cuisine, a live DJ and other festivities, door prizes, party favors, two floors of cash bars, and a complimentary champagne toast at midnight. (Must be 21 or older.) Tickets are $100 (10% discount for members of The Leonardo), at theleonardo.org.

New Year’s Eve Masquerade Ball • Maven Cinemas, 120 W. Main St., American Fork • The repertory moviehouse is offering two screens of formal-dress fun on Sunday, Dec. 31: A screening of the 2004 film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera,” with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum, at 9:20 p.m., and Jim Henson’s 1984 fantasy “Labyrinth,” with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, at 10 p.m. Guests are encouraged to dress up in “masquerade attire” with masks; both movies are scheduled to end just before the stroke of midnight. Tickets are $10 for either movie, available at mavencinemas.com.

Noon Year’s Eve • Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, 12033 Lone Peak Parkway, Draper • For kids who won’t stay awake until midnight, the aquarium offers two confetti countdowns in the lobby on Sunday, Dec. 31. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m., and includes face painting. The event is included with general admission.

Early Eve and Newphoria • Millcreek Common, 1354 E. Chambers Ave., Millcreek • Two events on Sunday, Dec. 31: Early Eve, runs from 6 p.m. to a “countdown” at 8 p.m., and includes live music, games, food trucks, an arcade and a dance party with DJ Godina; and Newphoria, 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., with performances by Club Mungo and The SugaTones, and fireworks at midnight. Tickets are $5 per person for Early Eve, and $20 in advance (at MillcreekCommon.org) or $25 at the door, for Newphoria.

Music venues

(Ever Upward Entertainment) Bluegrass band Pixie and the PartyGrass Boys are scheduled to perform a New Year’s Eve show, Dec. 31, 2023, at The Commonwealth Room in South Salt Lake.

The Commonwealth Room • 195 W. Commonwealth Ave., South Salt Lake • Pixie and the PartyGrass Boys, a bluegrass band, will headline on Sunday, Dec. 31. Opening act: Laney Lou & The Bird Dogs. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., music starts at 8:30 p.m. The show is sold out, but resale tickets are available.

The Complex • 536 W. 100 South, Salt Lake City • Saturnalia, a two-night EDM event (for 18 and older), happens in two of The Complex’s venues, The Grand and Rockwell, on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 30-31. Doors open at 7 p.m. each night. Tickets are $69.99 for one night, $119.99 for both nights, at thecomplexslc.com.
