An influencer who used to smoke marijuana ‘all day every day’ has revealed how ‘cutting back’ on weed landed her in the hospital after she suffered from a rare reaction that left her vomiting constantly.

Charly Jordan, 24, a model and DJ from Los Angeles, California, has been documenting her attempts to stop using cannabis on her TikTok account, where she boasts more than eight million followers.

But the social media star recently revealed that she had been diagnosed with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) – a severe condition that people can develop through ‘long-term marijuana’ use.

Charly uploaded a clip of herself in the hospital on December 28, while giving her followers an ‘update’ on her attempts to stop smoking.

Charly Jordan’s rare condition: What is cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS)?

  • CHS is a condition caused by long-term marijuana use
  • It causes frequent, severe nausea and vomiting
  • It tends to occur in people who use cannabis at least once a week and occurs more often in adults who have been using cannabis since their adolescent years
  • Experts don’t know exactly what causes CHS but researchers suspect genetics play a role
  • Only a small portion of people who regularly use cannabis develop CHS

‘Update: Cutting back gave you CHS,’ she wrote in the clip, which showed her standing in front of her hospital bed and lip-syncing along to a sound that said, ‘Wow, I need a minute to think about this.’

‘Going cold turkey now,’ Charly added in the caption. ‘Thank you for all your love and support. It was honestly super scary being this sick, but a huge eye-opener.’

According to the Cleveland Clinic, ‘people who have CHS experience recurring episodes of nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and abdominal pain.’

‘CHS is more than just a side effect of marijuana. It is a condition that can lead to health complications if left untreated,’ it added.

‘People who use cannabis chronically are at risk of developing CHS. It tends to occur in people who use cannabis at least once a week and occurs more often in adults who have been using cannabis since their adolescent years.’

Charly first announced that she was going to try to quit smoking back in October. At the time, she posted a video to her TikTok explaining that she was having a ‘very hard time holding herself accountable’ and that she hoped by documenting the process online, it might make it easier.

‘I’ve tried to stop a couple of times and I just can’t do it,’ she admitted. ‘I want to feel comfortable documenting this because no one around me smokes like I do or understands what I’m going through and I know a lot of people view these videos, so I would like some help.

‘I’d like tips. I’d like to understand what the f**k I’m supposed to do. I preach on balance and health and I’m disappointed in myself for getting out of balance.

‘But I want to admit it and be honest and get it back in check. I want to cut [tobacco and weed] out and I want you guys to hold me accountable. And I’m gonna hold myself accountable.’

In the clip, the influencer explained that she started smoking regularly three years prior after she moved to LA and landed a job as a DJ.

‘Being in the club every weekend DJing, you developed some bad habits,’ she continued. ‘But I feel like I’ve outgrown that.

‘I stopped drinking six months ago, I’ll have beer and wine here and there but for the most part I cut out liquor.

‘I also stopped vaping, I’m now what they call “California sober” which means I still smoke weed. But I want to be sober sober.’

Charly explained that she believed she had an ’emotional attachment to weed.’

She also said she suffers from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) – a condition that leads to severe PMS symptoms in the weeks before your period, as well as anxiety, depression, and mood changes – and that the cannabis helped her deal with the pain she had endured from it.

‘I really struggle with PMDD and I’m not medicated – I don’t take birth control, I’m not on anti-depressants, I don’t take anxiety meds. I take no medication,’ she explained.

‘So marijuana has been an amazing medicine to basically help with my panic attacks. When I’m having intense mood swings it helps to pull me out.

‘It helps with sleeping. It helps with eating. It helps with so many other things. It’s been such a medicine for me but I need to find long-term solutions.

‘Cannabis is a great temporary solution but it’s not something you should rely on long-term.’

At the time Charly said she wasn’t going to quit ‘cold turkey’ and that she was going to try to ‘smoke only at night’ and ‘ween’ herself off.’

‘I’m really f**king scared actually,’ she concluded. ‘But I’m really interested to see how this goes.

‘It’s really not a pretty experience, I’ve gone a week and a half without it before and the withdrawal period is really rough.

‘But I know so many people have also been through the same thing. If you want to stop smoking, let’s do it together.’

One day later, she posted a video of her breaking down in tears, which she captioned ‘Day two of [smoking] break.’

In it, the emotional TikTok star said she was crying because of a video she had seen on the app, but didn’t specify which one, adding in the caption, ‘I’m feeling too much.’

On December 18, the 24-year-old shared another update with her followers, explaining that she had ‘significantly cut back’ since she first announced that she was going to stop two months prior.

‘I’m currently not smoking at all during the day which is honestly such a crazy improvement from where I was,’ she shared.

‘I was smoking every day all day for the past four years and now I’m only smoking at night.

‘I talked about in my first video how I wasn’t gonna go completely cold turkey to start because it’s very, very difficult but my goal is to get to that point.

‘I have many days where I don’t smoke [at all]. I don’t want to mislead anyone and say I’ve completely quit but that is where I’m trying to get to.

‘I go multiple days without it sometimes. But some days I do smoke at night, and I’ll have days like that back to back. It’s an ongoing journey for me.’

Charly said she had been suffering from ‘physical withdrawals’ including ‘nausea, over heating, and hot and cold flashes,’ but that most of the problems she had faced were ’emotional.’

‘I’m easily irritated and I’m learning how to cope with anxiety without cannabis,’ she explained.

Despite the negative affects, Charly said she had already developed a better ‘understanding of herself’ and her ‘PMDD diagnosis’ since cutting back on weed.

‘The more I cut back on smoking the more I’ve understood my PMDD. Me not smoking made me realize how bad my medical issues were,’ she dished.

‘It has forced me to address them. Now I’ve been able to take proper steps to understand why my body feels in so much pain sometimes, which has been great.

‘Now, because I’m much more aware, I’m able to fix some of those problems without cannabis, like with my diet and through exercise and eating correctly.’

She also said she had started therapy, adding, ‘I’ve learned not to use cannabis to cover up what I’m feeling.

‘I have taken massive steps to deal with my issues on my own instead of using cannabis as a crutch.

‘I think a lot of people with substance abuse problems are trying to cover up some sort of pain or something they’re struggling with.

‘When I stopped smoking, I really had to face a lot of issues that I had swept under the rug over the past few years.

‘I prioritized working over self care and cannabis helped me cope. But now, I’m so thankful I have the resources and time to not have to use that anymore and get real help, which has been so incredible. There are so many resources out there.’
