POSTGAME UPDATE: Clark says she’s OK

Caitlin Clark had a scary-looking collision with a fan after Sunday’s game, but she says she’s OK.

FINAL: Ohio State 100, Iowa 92, OT

Cotie McMahon (33 points) was too much for Iowa today. The Buckeye post player was dominant in the second half and overtime. The Hawkeyes certainly would have preferred to defend her today without having to worry about constant foul trouble.

Ohio State outscored Iowa 42-27 in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Caitlin Clark gave it everything she had, finishing with 45 points.

Iowa’s Hannah Stuelke fouled out with 3:25 left. She scored 10 points. All those whistles caught up with the Hawkeyes.

Iowa’s loss was its first of the Big Ten Conference season (7-1). The Hawkeyes’ only other loss was against Kansas State on Nov. 16 in Iowa City.

Here is Dargan Southard’s instant analysis from Columbus.

End of regulation: Iowa 83, Ohio State 83

We’re headed to overtime after the Buckeyes outscored the Hawkeyes 25-18 in the fourth quarter.

Celeste Taylor’s jumper with 16 seconds left gave Ohio State an 83-82 lead. Then Hannah Stuelke made one of two free throws to tie the score with about 10 seconds left.

Caitlin Clark hit two free throws with 1:17 left to give the Hawkeyes an 82-79 lead. She’s had to work for her 36 points today.

Q4/3:04 left: Crowd is getting into it (Iowa 78, Ohio State 77)

Ohio State took a 77-76 lead with about 3:30 left, and then Caitlin Clark scored to get the lead back with 3:04 left. This has been a great game and the crowd has been loud.

Iowa has missed a few layups while getting fouled. Those missed opportunities look big now.

Hannah Stuelke missed two free throws with 3:50 left. Clark missed one shortly before that.

Q4/7:23 left: Still a tight game in Columbus (Iowa 72, Ohio State 65)

Ohio State’s Cotie McMahon is really a handful around the basket. She’s exceptionally powerful and aggressive in the paint, and Iowa can’t do much to counter her because of all the whistles. McMahon has 17 points to lead the Buckeyes.

Clark is up to 29 points, two shy of her average. Molly Davis is the only other Hawkeye in double figures (11).

Three-point shooting keeping Ohio State in the game. The Buckeyes are 10-of-19 from long range.

A key stat for Iowa: The Hawkeyes have a 15-2 edge in fast-break points.

End of third quarter: O’Grady, Affolter come up big (Iowa 65, Ohio State 58)

Addison O’Grady had seven big points in the third quarter as Iowa battled foul trouble. Then Sydney Affolter had a layup and one to give Iowa a seven-point lead. The Hawkeyes needed some unexpected production with Kate Martin in foul trouble.

Emma Shumate hit two clutch 3-pointers for Ohio State to keep the Buckeyes close.

Buckle up, Hawkeye fans. These last 10 minutes might be a wild ride.

Sunday’s attendance in Columbus: 18,660

Q3/4:50 left: O’Grady’s 3-point play gives Iowa a boost (Iowa 56, Ohio State 52)

Addison O’Grady’s layup plus one off a nice assist from Caitlin Clark gave Iowa four-point play in what has become a physical, chippy game at times.

Clark has 26 points. She has not been pleased with some of the refs’ work today.

Taylor Thierry has four personal fouls for Ohio State. Ditto for Iowa’s Kate Martin. Not sure if these teams will have any players left by the end of the game.

A lot of head-scratching calls from the refs today, which some people might say is pretty typical in college basketball these days.

Q3/9:17 left: Another important whistle

Ohio State’s Celeste Taylor was just called for her third foul. She transferred from Duke after being named the ACC defensive player of the year. She stayed in the game.

Iowa’s Hannah Stuelke came up slow after a missed basket early in the half but appears to be OK.

Halftime: Foul trouble is a big factor now (Iowa 45, Ohio State 43)

The officials certainly brought their whistles with them to Columbus today. Both teams are battling foul trouble.

For Iowa, Kate Martin has three fouls. Hannah Stuelke and Sharon Goodman both have two.

For Ohio State, Taylor Thierry has three fouls. Jacy Sheldon and Madison Greene have two apiece.

Caitlin Clark has 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. She has made seven of her eight free throws. Iowa is playing so-so on defense, holding the Buckeyes to 44% shooting although they are 50% (7-of-14) from 3-point range.

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder’s comments with NBC-TV as the first half ended: “We were able to break that press and then we were able to fast-break against them off a miss. So they had to go to a Plan B. Now we gotta take advantage of a few things down here. Both teams are fouling a lot. It’s a tight-called game. We gotta remember that in the second half.”

Q2/5:41 left: Buckeyes need a TO (Iowa 38, Ohio State 32)

Kate Martin hit a 3-pointer with 5:41 left to extend Iowa’s lead to six, and Ohio State coach Kevin McGuff had seen enough. He called for a timeout, which became a media timeout. Martin’s shot came after Clark got to the basket for a layup with little resistance from the Buckeyes.

Clark will take a breather out of the timeout.

Dargan Southard, our reporter in Columbus, with an important note regarding Iowa foul trouble:

And now Martin has picked up her third foul, with 2:26 left in the half. That’s a big development as Martin has played well in the first half. Her second-half minutes will be impacted.

End of first quarter: Looks like Iowa will have to work for a W today (Iowa 26, Ohio State 24)

Sort of a sloppy end to the first quarter. Plenty of fouls and turnovers to go around. The Hawkeyes and Buckeyes have combined for nine turnovers so far.

Caitlin Clark hit two free throws in the final 30 seconds to give Iowa a narrow lead. She leads all scorers with 13 points. Hannah Stuelke has seven. Cotie McMahon leads Ohio State with 11 points.

Interestingly, Ohio State isn’t using much full-court pressure. Perhaps the Buckeyes think Clark and Iowa’s other guards won’t have any trouble with it, so better to get back into the halfcourt defense as soon as possible. Again, something to keep an eye on.

So far this looks like a game that Iowa will have to grind out in order to get the W. Ohio State is playing with energy, pushing the pace and crashing the boards. And of course the Buckeyes have a capacity crowd providing verbal support, just the latest sold-out arena on the Caitlin Clark tour.

Q1/4:46 mark: Hot shooting early (Iowa 14, Ohio State 14)

Both teams are shooting the ball well early. Caitlin Clark has a pair of 3-pointers, and the Buckeyes have two of their own. The teams have combined to make 10 of 19 shots from the floor.

Ohio State likes to press, so it will be critical for Iowa to get stops on defense, which prevents the Buckeyes from setting up their pressure. So far, though, Ohio State isn’t pressing after each basket but rather picking its spots. Something to watch moving forward.

Hannah Stuelke certainly looks healthy early, running the floor and finishing on the break. She has five early points.

Good to see Gabbie Marshall hit a basket and one early on against her home-state Buckeyes.

Possible break for Iowa: Ohio State’s Celeste Taylor was sent to the bench early with two quick fouls.

11:00 a.m. CT: Almost time for tip-off; keep an eye on Marshall

An interesting storyline to watch today will be Gabbie Marshall’s return to her home state. The Cincinnati native certainly would like to make some big shots against the Buckeyes. She has made 13 of her last 24 attempts from 3-point range entering this game.

10:44 a.m. CT: Iowa has Stuelke back

We have Hawkeye women’s basketball beat reporter Dargan Southard at the Schottenstein Center today. He says “Hannah Stuelke warming up like normal and looks ready to roll. Hawkeyes should be at full strength today.”

Stuelke missed the Wisconsin game with a lower-body injury. A healthy Stuelke would seem to be an important factor in Iowa remaining unbeaten in the Big Ten today. She has been the Hawkeyes’ most effective post player (13.2 points per game, 6.9 rebounds per game).
