Is There Mail on Tax Day? USPS, UPS, FedEx Hours Today

On Monday, many Americans will file their taxes since it is the deadline across the nation to either submit your tax return or ask for an extension. Some might even wonder if the day is a holiday and if any stores or services, like mail delivery, will be affected.

The IRS says fiscal year filers are required to submit their tax returns on the fourth month of the year, on the 15th day, which is Monday this year.

“If day 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the due date is delayed until the next business day,” the IRS says. “Your return is considered filed on time if your envelope is properly addressed, postmarked and deposited in the mail by the due date.

“If you can’t file by the due date of your return, you can request an automatic 6-month extension of time to file,” the IRS says.

However, an extension to file your tax return does not serve as an extension to pay. “You should pay any owed taxes by your original due date to avoid possible penalties,” the IRS says.

While Tax Day may be a very busy day for those filing at the last minute, it is not a federal holiday, so schools, banks and many stores will be open. Mail delivery services like the United States Postal Service (USPS), United Parcel Service (UPS) and FedEx are expected to have normal operating hours where you live.

April 15 is not listed on the USPS holiday calendar for 2024, so Americans can expect normal mail delivery services. It is best to check with your local USPS locations for operating hours.

“We will have normal post office operations on Monday, April 15, with no extended hours at retail post offices,” a USPS spokesperson told Newsweek.

Similarly, Tax Day is not on the holiday schedules for UPS and FedEx, meaning regular delivery services should be expected from both.

“It’ll be business as usual on Tax Day,” a UPS spokesperson told Newsweek.

Newsweek reached out to FedEx via email for further information on delivery services.

Of course, many have already filed their taxes. The Washington Post reported that 90 million homes across the nation had done so by March 29.

Earlier this month, the IRS said Maine and Rhode Island residents were receiving a three-month extension to the tax filing deadline because of severe flooding in those states.

“The tax relief postpones various tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred from January 9, 2024, through July 15, 2024,” the IRS said in a release issued April 4. “As a result, affected individuals and businesses will have until July 15, 2024, to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.”
