Kelly Rowland Explains Viral Confrontation with Security on Cannes Red Carpet

Kelly Rowland is speaking out following a viral heated exchange with security on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet on Tuesday.

After footage of the Destiny’s Child alum speaking sternly to a security guard on the Marcello Mio premiere red carpet made waves online, she explained the incident in an interview with the Associated Press at the amfAR Cannes Gala in France on Thursday, May 23.

“The woman knows what happened. I know what happened,” Rowland, 43, told the outlet. “I have a boundary, and I stand by those boundaries, and that is it.”

“And there were other women that attended that carpet who did not quite look like me, and they didn’t get scolded or pushed off or told to get off,” she added. “I stood my ground, and she felt like she had to stand hers, but I stood my ground.”

PEOPLE has reached out to the Cannes Film Festival for comment.

The incident occurred on the Palais des Festivals staircase, where Rowland and the security guard got into an exchange. Multiple people accompanying the “Dilemma” singer seemed to interfere, but the guard continued moving them along the carpet.

Earlier this year, Rowland starred in a film of her own — Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa. Upon its release on Netflix in February, she told PEOPLE starring in the erotic legal thriller “was quite an experience.”

“I remember being very nervous when I read the script and I remember thinking about everything that an erotic thriller possesses and that made me very intimidated,” she said at the time. “And then I had a friend of mine who called me and he said, ‘You know, Kel, if it doesn’t scare you, what’s the purpose of doing it?’”

“And so I literally ran to it. I figured everything out. Tyler was so amazing and instrumental in this whole process and [my costar] Trevante [Rhodes] was just a pleasure to work with. I was very blessed,” added Rowland.
