Liverpool defender Owen Beck out of FA Cup tie due to Scottish League Cup suspension

Owen Beck will be denied the chance to make an immediate impact back at Liverpool in the FA Cup third round tie at Arsenal on Sunday with the young full-back serving a suspension.

The 21-year-old left-back was recalled from what had been earmarked as a season-long loan spell at Dundee earlier this week to provide cover in the absence of the injured Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.

However, it has since emerged that Beck will not be eligible to feature at the Emirates Stadium as he must serve a one-match ban — a legacy of his otherwise successful stint in Scotland.

The suspension relates to the two bookings the Welshman collected in the Scottish League Cup matches last July against Bonnyrigg Rose and Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Dundee finished second in Group E and failed to qualify for the knockout phase of the competition.

The Football Association have confirmed that the full-back has an unserved one-match ban from Scotland which applies to his next first-team competitive game.

Beck impressed at Dundee, playing 20 times and scoring twice — against Hibernian and Motherwell — to attract interest from other clubs in Scotland and England. Yet Liverpool opted to recall the youngster to bolster their options at full-back.

Asked on Friday about the decision to recall Beck — who  played twice for Liverpool in the Carabao Cup in 2021 — early from his loan, Jurgen Klopp said: “He made big steps. Now the situation here is clear – we lost two of our left-backs so it makes a sense to bring back a boy we like who is available to us.”
