Mauricio Pochettino has urged Chelsea fans to remain ‘calm’ about Cole Palmer, despite the youngster being ‘very talented’, as proven by his recent performances.

Palmer left Manchester City this summer to join the West London Blues, and has proven himself as a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge, scoring three goals in five starts, most recently a penalty in their 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Monday.

However, the Chelsea boss has urged the club’s supporters to remain patient with the player during his first season in London.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Man City, Pochettino said: ‘So soon to talk too much, we need to be calm, very talented player, getting more mature and experience.

‘He has the capacity to be the playmaker that can link with his team-mates, very important for us in the way we want to play.

‘Not talk too much as need to give the time to learn and improve and see in few years if he will be the big player we saw.’

Pochettino previously likened 21-year-old Palmer to Argentina World Cup winner Angel Di Maria.

When asked if he thought Palmer was like Juan Mata, the Chelsea boss replied: Pochettino said: ‘Juan Mata? No, he is more Di Maria! You know, the body and the way he moves.’

Palmer played only four times in the Champions League for Man City during their Treble-winning season, while also making only two starts in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola said Palmer spurned his offer of more playing time at Man City when he made his move south in a £42.5million deal.

Guardiola saw him as most useful on the right of a front three, but Palmer had other ideas.

The Man City manager revealed: ‘I said to him “Riyad Mahrez is leaving, you are going to get a chance here”. ‘He said “No, I’m not going to play here, I want to leave” so I said “OK, leave!”’

Chelsea have won three, drawn one and lost one since Pochettino turned to him at a time of crisis, although Sunday’s home game against Palmer’s old team will prove to be a stern test.
