Newcastle’s Lewis Miley out for six weeks with back injury

Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley is expected to miss around six weeks with a back injury.

Miley has been away with the England Elite League Squad (under-20s level) during this international break, playing 90 minutes as they beat Poland 5-1 on Friday.

The 17-year-old was not involved, though, when the team beat Czech Republic 3-1 on Tuesday.

Miley has enjoyed a breakout season with Newcastle — having made his first-team debut in May — featuring 26 times across all competitions after making his first appearance of the campaign in September. He signed a long-term contract with Newcastle in January.

Miley has started 14 of Newcastle’s last 17 Premier League games, with Eddie Howe relying on the youngster after losing midfielders Sandro Tonali through suspension and Joelinton to a thigh injury.

Newcastle have 10 Premier League matches to play following the international break, beginning their run-in with the visit of West Ham United on Saturday. Miley faces missing the majority of those remaining fixtures, with Newcastle’s season ending in approximately eight weeks when they travel to Brentford on May 19.
