‘No one outside UA has done more for the country’ – NATO chief Stoltenberg up for Nobel Peace Prize

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the deputy chairman of the Norwegian Liberal Party, former Norwegian Culture Minister Abid Raja, reported Verdens Gang (VG) on Jan. 31.

“No one has done more for peace and democracy in Europe over the past year than Jens Stoltenberg,” Raja said. “So, it is only natural that the Liberal Party is proposing his candidacy to receive the (Nobel) Peace Prize this year.”

Stoltenberg visited Turkey, the UK, the USA, and many other countries, trying to organize negotiations that could stop the war in Ukraine, Raja said.

“No one has worked for Ukraine more than him, being always governed by reason, logic and emotions – and he never gets tired,” he said. “He works tirelessly for peace in Ukraine and remains the most important peacekeeping force outside Ukraine.”

Raja is proud to be Norwegian when he sees Stoltenberg’s work on the international stage. The fact that Stoltenberg is Norwegian should not stop the Norwegian Nobel Committee from awarding him the peace prize, he believes.

“It has never been the case that the Nobel Prize cannot be awarded to a Norwegian, because it is the Norwegian Nobel Committee that decides who will receive the prize,” said Raja. “Stoltenberg deserves it, regardless that he is Norwegian.”

Former U.S. President Donald Trump was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his “historic” policy in the Middle East, it was reported on Jan. 31.

Stoltenberg met with the speaker of the United States House of Representatives Mike Johnson and other members of Congressional leadership in Washington, D.C. for talks on Ukraine on Jan. 30.

Stoltenberg’s term as NATO Secretary General expires in October 2024. His likely successor is the Netherlands’ Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
