“First, referring to “the radical ideology of the far left” detracts from any impression (Brenner) might wish to convey of being reasonable, don’t you think?” – Jim Hartman, Columbus
Unsustainable and unneeded
Re “DeMora’s column proof Democrats care more about unions than kids,” Feb. 21: I have been a high school family and consumer science teacher for 22 years.
While moving forward slowly on fair school funding (partially phasing in a plan that would finally fix our unconstitutional school funding formula), Sen. Andrew Brenner and other statehouse Republicans put private school vouchers on the fast track by passing an unsustainable and unneeded universal voucher system.
But now Brenner demands to be praised for the former and is indignant about criticism of the latter, even as the actual cost of universal vouchers is on pace to be much higher than the legislature budgeted for.
Brenner would also like to hide his head in the sand about Ohio’s drop from fifth to 29th in school performance in recent years.
It is an inescapable fact that this drop in results corresponds with years of costly expansion to Ohio’s private school voucher system and decades of inaction on Ohio’s unconstitutional funding system.

Sen. Andrew Brenner unreasonable
I am writing regarding the Feb. 14 column “GOP’s school funding system has hurt Ohio’s education rank” by Sen. Bill DeMora and the Feb. 21 column “DeMora’s column proof Democrats care more about unions than kids” by Sen. Andrew Brenner.
I have some constructive criticism for Ohio Sen. Andrew Brenner.
First, referring to “the radical ideology of the far left” detracts from any impression you might wish to convey of being reasonable, don’t you think?
Andrew Brenner: Columbus schools has millions. Senator lying on Republicans to feed money to school union.
Also, you cite lots of facts and figures. How about citing the DeRolph decision, and trying to show that its objections have been satisfied?
