Over 50 arrested at protest that blocked I-5 in Eugene

EUGENE Ore. (KPTV) – The junction of Interstate 105 at Interstate 5 was temporarily closed on Monday morning after a group of protestors blocked the way.

Fifty-two people were arrested at the protest for disorderly conduct, the Oregon State Police said. Over 120 officers responded to the scene to assist.

Two of those arrested were also charged with conspiracy and second-degree theft.

Around 10 a.m., police were called out the I-5 and I-105 as dozens of people, some donning Palestinian flags, blocked the highway. Several protestors were arrested on the scene.

According to OSP, protestors were given orders to disperse before dozens of people were arrested for disorderly conduct.

“Oregon State Police supports an individual’s right to lawfully protest and express concerns over world events.” OSP said in a statement. “However, today’s actions put Oregon’s motorists in danger as well as the protestors who blocked the roadway.”

This was happening at the same time as similar pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked traffic in Chicago and San Francisco.

Traffic began moving around 11 a.m. in at least one lane.
