Police say banger ban will prevent criminals from operating during Christmas

The police commissioner in Gombe, Hayatu Usman, says the ban on the sale and unauthorised use of fireworks is still in force in the state.

He said this in a statement by the Gombe command’s spokesman, ASP Mahid Abubakar, on Saturday.

Mr Usman stated that the ban would prevent criminals from using it to create tension and commit crimes during the festivities.

He also reiterated the ban on the unauthorised use of sirens, covering number plates and removing motorcycle silencers during the Yuletide.

“The command wishes to reiterate the continued ban and enforcement on the sale and use of fireworks, knockout, sirens and covering of number plates. Public compliance with these measures is crucial for the overall safety of law-abiding citizens and visitors alike,” said Mr Usman.

The police commissioner said the command had intensified security measures to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens during the upcoming Yuletide celebrations.

“This proactive approach is considered necessary in order to prevent criminal activities and maintain relative peace for a hitch-free celebration across the state,” added Mr Usman.

Mr Usman said that he had directed early deployment of personnel to strategic locations, places of worship and other public places.

While reiterating the command’s commitment to protect lives and property, Mr Usman urged residents to be vigilant and provide credible information on suspicious activities to the police to ensure a crime-free environment.

He further called on parents and guardians to monitor their children during the festive period.
