Premier League soccer player Tom Lockyer suffers cardiac arrest, collapses on the pitch during game

Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer remained hospitalized Sunday after suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the pitch during a game on Saturday.

The Premier League soccer game between Bournemouth and Luton Town was halted after Lockyer went down. The team said in a statement Sunday that Lockyer is “still undergoing tests and scans, and is awaiting the results before the next steps for his recovery are determined.”

Lockyer, 29, collapsed on the pitch during the 58th minute with the score level at 1-1. Lockyer fell to the ground with no other player near him. Players reacted immediately to get medical attention as Luton manager Rod Edwards ran onto the field.

Lockyer was carried off the field on a stretcher as fans applauded. The game at Bournemouth’s Vitality Field was eventually abandoned due to the incident. Luton Town confirmed in a statement Saturday that Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest, but was “responsive” by the time he was taken off the field.

Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch for the second time in his career. Lockyer previously collapsed on the pitch during Luton’s playoff final win against Coventry on May 27, a win that earned them a promotion to the Premier League for the 2023-24 season.

Lockyer spent five days in the hospital and had surgery to fix an atrial fibrillation. Lockyer underwent numerous tests and scans before being cleared for a return to play.
