Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews is being hailed as a hero after offering help to a woman experiencing a medical emergency during a flight from Baltimore to Phoenix.
The situation was “genuinely scary,” according to Andrew Springs, another passenger on the plane who recounted the incident on X.
“The doctor and nurse attending to her couldn’t find a strong pulse, her blood pressure was extremely low, and required oxygen to breathe,” Springs wrote.
Springs said Andrews, 28, asked the medical professionals if the problem could be the woman’s blood sugar and offered a diabetic testing kit he had. The three-time Pro Bowler was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 9 and monitors his blood sugar levels regularly.
Andrews then instructed the doctor and nurse on how to use the test kit. The woman’s heart rate later stabilized, and paramedics were on site as soon as the plane landed.
“Andrews deplaned quietly. No fanfare. As he has done his whole career, he stepped up in a huge moment when people needed him most,” Springs said.
The Ravens released a statement from Andrews crediting the Southwest flight staff and medical professionals for their response to the emergency.
“In addition to the fast-acting flight attendants, the real heroes are the nurse and doctor who also happened to be on the plane. Thankfully they were able to provide the woman the quick assistance she needed.
