SPORTS: Dolphins’ Michael Jesus’ safety holds up as the game-winner in 2-0 shutout over JFK; MVPs named | Guam Sports

In one of the most interesting and competitive head-to-head matchups of the football season, the visiting Southern High School Dolphins defeated the John F. Kennedy High School Islanders 2-0 in the Guam Department of Education Interscholastic Sports Association 2023-2024 playoff quarterfinals on Saturday at JFK’s Ramsey Field.

When the two teams met in the regular season, JFK defeated Southern 13-12.

With the win, the Dolphins advance to the semifinals, where they will take on the seven-time defending champion Father Duenas Memorial School Friars at 7 p.m. Friday, at George Washington High School.

When the Dolphins and Friars met last month during the regular season, FD shut out Southern 35-0.

The Friars, this season, have outscored their opponents 134-0 and will be going for their 71st consecutive win.

A defensive battle

In the Southern vs. JFK game, where both offenses failed to find each other’s end zone, a lone safety in the second quarter by Michael Jesus held up to punch the Dolphins’ ticket into the semifinals.

MVPs

Ahead of Friday’s championship game, ISA announced the offensive and defensive MVPs and first team, second team, and honorable mention selections.

Father Duenas quarterback and kicker, Alex Sojo, who led the Friars to a perfect 5-0 record, was selected as the offensive MVP.

Guam High School’s Cameron Brantley, who led his team to the semifinals, was named defensive MVP.
