Buffs from America’s Purdue University suggested addressing sexual well-being may be a crucial factor in warding off mental decline in later life.

The study found: “For adults aged 62–74, better sexual quality and feelings of physical pleasure and emotional satisfaction was related to better cognitive functioning.

“While for those aged 75–90, more frequent sex was related to better cognitive functioning.

“Feelings of physical pleasure were related to better cognitive functioning for men but not women.

“The findings highlight the importance of age and gender in modifying the link between sexuality and cognition in later life.”

The authors surveyed more than 1,600 elders as part of the study – who also took cognitive tests to determine their intelligence level.

Researcher and study chief Shannon Shen said: “The population of older adults… is growing, and many older adults face multiple health conditions.

“I focus on sexual relationships because they are an intimate form of social relationships which are often overlooked in the older adult population.

“Despite there being a great deal of research on cognitive decline, there is little work that considers how intimate social relationships may be beneficial for cognitive functioning.”
