Three hurt in plane crash near Delaware County Airport

MUNCIE, Ind. — Three people were injured Monday morning when a small plane crashed onto the Cardinal Greenway west of the Delaware County Airport — the plane’s pilot and two people who were talking on the greenway.

Emergency dispatchers were notified of the crash at 10:26 a.m.

Jeff Stanley, chief deputy for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, said the plane apparently was approaching the airport from the north or northwest when it struck trees before coming down on the greenway.

All three victims were taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Stanley said.

“The two pedestrians, we don’t know if the plane actually hit them or if it was debris from the airplane,” the chief deputy said.

Names and conditions of those injured were not available.

On Monday afternoon, portions of the crashed plane were visible along with the trail about 100 yards east of Shaffer Road, north of Riggin Road.

The sheriff department’s crash reconstruction team, and deputies with the investigations division, were conducting an initial investigation, Stanley said.

Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration were reported to be on their way to the scene.

Several people witnessed the crash, Stanley said, and it was also possibly captured on surveillance video.
