Initial reactions and observations
- Well, that was not ideal. Not only did Bayern Munich lose, two key players — Raphaël Guerreiro and Eric Dier sustained injuries, while Leon Goretzka and Harry Kane got zero rest. Games like these leave a miserable feeling afterward.
- Bayern Munich were not even competitive, and they didn’t try to be. You could tell the team was saving energy for the Real Madrid game coming up. Still, a 3-1 loss may be more than Tuchel bargained for, especially given how dominant Stuttgart looked in attack.
- Kim Min-jae still seems to be reeling from his Madrid performance, he’s making mistakes he wouldn’t have earlier in the season.
- Manuel Neuer showed his age on the night. He made several key saves, but his efforts on both goals were sub-par. It’ll give Alexander Nubel, who was starting at the other end, some hope of light at the end of the tunnel.
- First Stanisic, now Jeong, Bayern exes have established a trend of scoring against their former club.
- Alphonso Davies is so bad right now, there’s no way Real Madrid will pay a single cent for him.

Kickoff: We’re underway!
One hour until kickoff: We have lineups! Serge Gnabry returns to the lineup as Bayern Munich rotates a LOT. Konrad Laimer, Leon Goretzka, and Thomas Müller have all been benched while Guerreiro and Pavlović start in midfield. Mazraoui is also rested as Alphonso Davies starts. Crazy how Davies is basically a bench player at this point.
Real Madrid and Stuttgart both wear white, but that doesn’t mean Bayern Munich will treat them both the same. When the Bundesliga is done and dusted and even Champions League qualification is secured, three points in the league is worth far less than an uneventful game with no injuries or overdue exertion.
Players like Harry Kane, Thomas Müller, Leon Goretzka, and Joshua Kimmich should still expect to take part in this game, but others like Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané will likely sit it out. This presents a valuable opportunity for the bench to make an impression — Mathys Tel, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, and others will doubtless relish this chance.
