What Is Destiny 2’s Into The Light Shiny Drop Rate? Where Does Attunement Work?

Destiny 2 players have been grinding Onslaught pretty hard the past week for reprised weapons, but more importantly “Limited Edition” shiny weapons that are only around when Into the Light is live, which is just until The Final Shape launches in early June.

The shiny grind is…intense. And as such, it may have Destiny 2 players wondering exactly what the drop rate is if they haven’t gotten many, or if they’ve been drowning in them compared to their friends. And I have some things to say about Attunement as well.

So, the shiny rate. I’ve seen some data from other players, and I’ve been tracking data myself. For me, for instance, I have:

• 14 shinies in my inventory. Subtract eight, given that those are curated rolls, not ones that have dropped, I don’t count those (and almost all curated rolls are bad anyway). So that’s 6 that have actually dropped for me.
• Between Onslaught chest drops, Shaxx chest openings, Shaxx rank engrams, Arcite bounty engrams and milestone engrams, I have had around maybe 160-165 drops since launch, given or take some. Let’s say 163.
• 6/163 is a 3.68% drop rate. From what I’ve seen, I may be a bit lucky, as other data shows maybe a 2% drop rate.

However, I think the one catch here is that end-of-run 50 wave chests have a higher chance of dropping shinies. And Legend may have a higher chance than Normal, which would make sense, and I doubt the average player is frequently clearing Legend 50s. Many players may not even be routinely clearing normal 50s, so not landing those chests. So if your drop rate is influenced by how many complete runs you’ve done, that’s a potential issue. For instance, if you’ve mainly been running 10 wave playlists, have failed a bunch of 50s and just done chest openings, it may be lower. For instance, some of the data I’ve seen is just chest openings, and that’s around 1-2%. So your best bet is to actually finish runs.

So, that’s shinies. Now, attunement, in brief.

• Attunement may only work on Onslaught chest drops. I’m not sure of the rate there, but it seems like 30-50% to me, anecdotally. I did not track that.
• Attunement does not appear to work on Shaxx’s chest. I don’t know about bounties and milestone engrams.
• Attunement does not seem to give you a better chance that the shiny that drops for you will be your attuned one. It is absolutely, positively not a guarantee.

In conclusion, there’s are averages, and there are outliers. While the drop rate may be set at one mark in particular, some will get more shinies, others less. I have a certain meme-making friend heading toward 1,000 total waves without one yet (godspeed), so it can happen.

I have no problem with shinies being rare, but I disagree with the idea that the limited edition weapons should disappear with The Final Shape while the activity stays. We’ll see if Bungie changes their mind on that.
